I just learned this interesting turn of events today. I hope this doesn't drastically alter anyone's plans for attending. It certainly hasn't changed the protesters plans. It promises to be quite the media circus.

Before everyone starts getting their butts up on their shoulders about this, and condemning the NRA for "compromising" or "giving in to anti-gun forces", note that it does not apply to the whole convention or for the entire duration.

Frankly, the NRA doesn't have any choice in the matter this time.

Quoting from a news article:

"Those attending the NRA Leadership Conference in Dallas are on notice that no firearms or “weapons of any kind,” or ammunition, will be allowed in the Kay Bailey Hutchinson Convention Center 'prior to and during” Pence’s appearance' on May 4. The NRA posted the restrictions ― a requirement of the Secret Service ― on a website announcing the conference."

Another quote from an NBC affiliate station:

"Vice President Mike Pence will be a keynote speaker at the National Rifle Association's convention in Dallas this week, and unlike the rest of the convention's events, guns will not be allowed."

The main reason I'm not going is that I am afraid that some looney is going to use the convention to "make a statement" and I just don't want to be anywhere around if, GOD FORBID, it happens. :(
Sorry....but there's some crazy people out there and I just would not put it past someone to show up with mahem on his/her mind.

I will not be surprised at anything that happens in Dallas May 4-6...that's next weekend, by the way.

Except for the Pence speech, the NRA Firearms Policy for the convention is clearly stated on the NRA's information pages relating to the convention.

Firearms Policy for the NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits

During the 2018 NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits, lawfully carried firearms will be permitted in the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center and the Omni Dallas Hotel in accordance with Texas law. When carrying your firearm remember to follow all federal, state, and local laws.

OP needs to edit the thread's title, and then apologize for spreading false information.

I will happily apologize, unfortunately I gave all that was given by the local news. Sadly they seem to have left out pertinent details from their news story. They did however mention that the vice president would be there. Unfortunately they left out the rest of the facts as we now know them. Thank you for the correction...carry on.

I wondered about this when I saw the the VP was going to appear. Since it's a National Special Security Event (NSSE), the Secret Service assumes primary jurisdiction.

Good to know, I'll have to leave my "stuff" behind when I go on Friday.

Thanks, Watchdog.

I don't know where the OP got his information, but over the past few years the Fake Stream Media has frequently spread the lie that the NRA is going to "ban firearms" at the NRAAM.

The last one I remember seeing was 2016 when someone in the media seized on the "no LOADED guns allowed in vendor displays" rule to misinform the world that the NRA was prohibiting guns at their premiere even.

In past years, the protesters were kept well away from the venue. What few there were, that is.

Irritating for sure but understandable these days.
Besides, if the Secret Service and all the local LEOs on scene aren't going to provide enough security, what are we going to add?

I hope it's Huge!!

I would like to go, just can't get away. I hope it's the biggest ever!
Yes, I mean Hugh Jackson..:D:D
OK, I meant HUGE,:o

I’m a bit surprised anybody these days would actually expect the Secret Service to allow private individuals to bring a gun into the same room as the president or vice-president in the first place.

In such a case, never mind 2nd Amendment rights: Until the individual is down, disarmed, cuffed, and dragged from the room, his right to live might be in serious jeopardy :D

This past Summer President Trump visited Long Island for an appearance on his anti- MS 13 initiative. The appearance was at the Suffolk County Police Academy and was attended by a LARGE amount of Federal, State and Local LEOs... none, despite affiliation or rank we’re allowed into the venue armed. Secret Service and the sort provided all interior security and associated agencies assisted with exterior and perimeter.

What no Yet's allowed? I am not going!

I bet Pence and crew has lots of firearms, probably full auto evil looking ones as well.;)

President Trump is going to NRA Dallas, too. Will be his 3rd in a row.

In 2016 NRA convention was in Louisville and I was leaving the fairgrounds. Almost to Crittenden Drive on the exit road when here comes this string of about 8 black Suburbans, all traffic was stopped, and it was then candidate Trump. Pretty cool. there were snipers on the building roofs and helicopters in the air. The line to hear him speak was separate from the NRA convention and subject to much tighter security. I got there about 8:30 am for a 9 am opening and the line for Trump was long at 8:30.

I'll be there. So will my wife. So will my son. We are all three members. He will miss Friday at school, but we are using it for the best civics lesson he could ever have. We have been taking it as an opportunity to teach him about the Constitution.

My experience with an NSSE was during the Democratic National Convention in Boston in 2004. I wasn't, and didn't want to be, on the crew that was inside the Boston Garden with the delegates, media, and others.

Those that did get selected got a separate security clearance and badge from the Secret Service. They had to wear the special badge in addition to anything else.

In this case there were Jersey barriers set up outside the NSSE zone, so we knew where we could and couldn't go. Also, there were police from all over New England, all six states and New York as well.

They were all carrying, but I think only Boston PD and the MA State Police were inside the NSSE.

Now that POTUS is going to be there, it's going to be even more insane. It would be nice if they were both there on the same day, but somehow I think it will be VP Pence on Friday and POTUS on Saturday. Saturday has always been the most packed day during the six or so NRAAM I've been to.

Which makes sense since the vast majority of NRA members work and have to come on their day off. ;) Plus a lot of the people who show up want to bring their kids and the kids are in school during the week.
