More than once, too. I also took my sniffy nose dog into the bank on many occasions. One guard, one time told me I couldn't bring the dog inside. The tellers all ganged up on him (he was a new rentacop.) They have suckers for kids and dog biscuits for hounds. Ole Spot even knew the drill. We'd move forward and he'd sit. Move up in line and sit. Then when it was our turn, he'd push in front and put his paws on the counter and beg. She'd give him a milkbone! Worked well.
Yes, on one occasion my jacket rode up over my carry gun. The guard, who I'd seen many times before, just walked over and nicely mentioned it to me. Spot licked his hand. They were buds.
State laws may vary. The first use of a legal carry weapon here in KY was at a bank robbery. The bad guys were coming out with their loot. They pointed a gun at a carry licensee, he dove for cover and started shooting. 2 wounded bad guys, one shook up carry holder.
Kentucky is as bad as Texas. Everyone here carries a gun. I asked my friendly guard (an off duty city cop.) He said he feels better when anyone he trusts has a gun.
I asked at my bank, they said unloaded only in the deposit box. Kind of common sense that doesn't make sense. Guns don't go bang without help.
We need to discuss risk here at some point. Its just like the financial crisis. Spread your risk, don't keep all your eggs in one basket. The more places you have guns, the greater your chances are of having a small loss. I view the bank deposit box as relatively secure if inaccessable. After the debacle in New Orleans, I altered my storage methods. My bank, or the branch I used is kind of below sea level. Its protected from the Ohio River by a dike. A big flood and a breach in the dike would result in my bank and its vault being submerged. Guns are now at a different branch (one with better hours, too) up on the hilltop.
I even asked the teller who helped me what the bank felt about gun storage. She was a nice smart ass. She said "why should you be different from anyone else?" Kind of sarcastic, but apparently a lot of my neighbors do the same thing. Common sense might go a long way. Put the gun in its box. Inside the box is the old ziplock brand bag with the slathered gun inside. Use CLP Collectors and a camel hair brush to smear it on. Way too thick.
Be aware of some problems. If there is some kind of natural disaster, be it tornado or earthquake, or maybe a truck bulldozing the bank by accident, you won't get instant access. Even a bank failure shouldn't prevent you from recovering your treasures eventually. It might not be fast enough to please you. It might takes weeks or months to sort out a mess.
Someone here at work heard my story a while back about carrying and banking. She asked why I'm so insecure. Banks are safe places. I think not. Holdups happen all the time. On occasion, a teller or customer or guard gets shot. Given my choice of trusting the kindness of a bank robber or defending myself, guess which one wins every time. Worse, I used to enjoy the one mile + hike to the bank. Walkers are sometimes targets.
When I go to gunshows, sometimes I take along a few dollars... Sometimes, on even rarer occasions, I bring back some cash (usually less.) I'm not the worlds most trusting person.
