I spent the first 30 years of my life in New Orleans and still maintain a lot of ties so I thing I speak with authority.
New Orleans used to be the Belle of the South-now she is more like a 60 year old stripper who thinks she is a "cougar". One saving grace is that she can still cook wonderful meals.
I wish I had a street map cause then I could redline the areas to stay away from. Primarily stay out of what is referred to as "central City" and the lower 9th and New Orleans East-all red zone areas, and fortunately areas that you would never go to anyway unless you had a very good reason. The Garden District, University/Audobon Park areas are yellow because of their proximity to the red zone of Central City. Carrolton area is a definite yellor-orange zome primarily due to a few DMZ pckets, known as Black Pearl, and the area that stretches fron Carrolton Ave to the Jefferson Parish line. Lakeview/city park area is pretty green but does go to yellow as you move east of City park-The Esplainade area is definitely orange to red-mainly do to it's proximity to a few pockets of DMZ that are offshoots from the central city area. The lakefront and West gentilly areas are pretty safe but the farther east you go the more it starts going yellow. As far as neighboring Jefferson Parish you are fairly green as long as you stay North of Airline Highway. Buck town/west end is a great place to live but good luck finding something there. Old Metairie is the best-but you ain't got the money for that pardner

Forget about St. Bernard Parish, they are still trying to recover from Katrina. I, at the risk of offending, would also advise against living on the West Bank of the Mississippi, unless that is where you will be working-if so, I would reccomend lower Algiers or Belle Chasse.
I do not go to New Orleand unless I am armed.

If you want, drop me some contact info, and I'll try to get a city map and some markers and some Turbo dog and red, yellow, green line it for you-Hell I might do that anyway and get a copyright on it

One last thing, ANYWHERE on the Northshore is GREAT!!!

Caj,

I wanted to thank you for your very thorough advice about where not to go in NOLA. I just spent last week there with the wife and granddaughter and had a great time - NOLA does cook well. As advised, I went armed (legally).

Still, no place is completely safe. We were walking to Brennan's for breakfast Wednesday morning, and at the corner of Royal and Conti, we had to step around the large pool of dried blood from the previous evening's shooting. They had it cleaned up before we walked back. Don't want to startle the tourists.

Buck
