Gunshow surprise **Update in first post**

Neat gun! Would you care to share the contact information for the Lew Horton distributor with me? I have a Model 686-6 SS with a five inch barrel labeled as a special edition Plus Talo model. I'd like to find out some more about it if possible. Thanks ...

Got my letter from Earl Minot from Lew Horton the other day via email. My ANA serial 686 no dash was shipped March 1986. No box and wearing Ahrends I traded a mint PM9 with box, docs and two mags for it. The 9 is a $700 gun in Mass. But hell its just plastic and I got a LH 686 for, I aint complaining! Enjoy it. They're wicked nice guns.

S&W Fan: Can you confirm the rear sight blade is black, not white outline, on this model?

I didn't realize these were a limited edition model. I believe ours may be one of these too. It was purchased without the box, a few years ago, so I didn't have the product code to look it up in the SCSW. (I don't see any other 2-1/2" no dash listed) It's a 686-0 with serial# is AFA63xx & it's original rear sight blade was black only. I think I'll send Lew Horton an email & ask if this was part of that production run too.

Let us know when you get your letter.

Mine does have the white outline on the rear sight.

Last night I asked my younger son if he wanted to see his new gun. I had to explain he has to wait until I'm no longer able to use it before it becomes his though ahahaha. His big brother gets the 4" at that time.

Thanks for all the info regarding Lew Horton and Talo/Lipsey. I appreciate it very much.

Update in first post. Also this hasn't been sent back for the "M" recall/modification. I'll shoot it first to decide if I do though I'm leaning towards not sending it back. My normal .357 load is the Silvertip 145gr., if there's no problems then no mod.

Do your research 1st. Ibelieve the original problem proved to be soft primers flowing into the firing pin hole. The ammo manufacturer changed the primer metal.

I helped my Dad choose and buy a 586 no dash in 6". He would not send it in for the mod fearing the great accuracy might be lost. He used Winchester ammo and never had the issue. When my brother and I divided Dads guns he chos3 that one on the third pick, his 2nd. I had taken the pre 64 m 70.
I did want the sw.

My bro is not gun maker model savy past Remington 700 721 100s etc. He called me a couple of years ago and said he bought a sw for275 in 357. I grilled him, he but on nis glasses, he thought it was stainless, it was a 4 inch no dash like Dads with the M. Lucky feller. He and his kids have shot tons of 357 in both, no problems. Perhaps a few others can chime in on reliability without the mod.

And very beautiful find, I think you might have drank the same koolaid as my bro. He is always findung a steal of a deal. I on the other hand seem to be cursed with high priced ones.

The 4" my dad bought did have the binding problem, it went back for the fix and has the M stamp. It's been flawless since.

This Saturday I'll have a chance to run some rounds through the "new" snubby and will post a range report.

Nice find SW Fan,
My 4" no-dash (shown in my avatar) is a retired LEO revolver. It doesn't have the M stamp and probably has more rounds through it than I will ever do. It has been solid when I used to shoot it often, although I don't take it out much anymore. It has been relegated to backup home defense. I still take it out to make sure it hasn't gotten dusty. Good luck on your test drive.

686-0 LH letter

Mine does have the white outline on the rear sight.

I'm 99% sure the original rear blade did not have a white outline but I replaced it (with a white outline) because it had a bent corner. If I can remember where I put it I'll confirm that.

. . . . . . . . .

I got a reply back today from Lew Horton (they've always replied promptly) & it was one of the 6000 made. This one in Feb-1985.

BLUEDOT37, I just received the emailed letter from Earl. Exactly the same as yours with the obvious difference in serial number and delivery date. Mine, as I mentioned earlier, was delivered to them in November of 1984.

No mention of the white outline (might need to contact S&W on that point) but considering the condition of the gun and the fact that my 4" no dash has the white outline and this 2.5" is an earlier one I don't doubt it was delivered that way.
