Gunsmith to disable IL

While serving on a grand jury during a break I asked a prosecuting attorney about the use of reloaded ammo in a justifiable homicide. He said in a premeditated situation it could be important but couldn't see it have any effect in justifiable self-defense. He was unaware of reloaded ammunition ever being an issue a murder trial. I'm in your camp and believe most of it is loose internet chatter and urban legends.

That is good news. I kinda wince when I practice with my HD ammo & disassemble it $1+ at a time.

The only tools needed are your fingers, a [gunsmith-type - see Brownells, Midway USA etc., not your garage/auto-type] screwdriver to remove the side plate, and the knowledge to remove and reinstall the hammer.

Once the hammer is out, the lock arm (aka flag) and the lock arm spring can be removed and stored away.

One slight clarification, if you don't mind. Otherwise, you're correct, it's easy to remove the IL.

And whoever said that the SW warranty is still good with the IL removed is correct also: I sent my 329PD back under warranty with the IL in a little bag (the same bag "The Plug" came in), nothing was said in either my e-mail nor letter that went back with the gun, and SW replaced the frame and installed the IL back in again. "The Plug" was installed within 24 hours of the gun getting back into my possession.

There's a fellow on the site that sells a device called "The Plug", which fills the hole left by the missing key hole. He includes directions to remove the lock.

Those who say disabling a safety device (this is how the civil attorney will describe it to the jury members who know nothing about guns) are dreaming. The first thing a lawyer suing you after a shooting will do is have the gun examined. He will learn of the modification and use it against you in court. I have asked several lawyers about this and all said they would have a field day in court with someone who removed the lock.

The gunsmiths refusing to do it are right and they are smart. They don't want to be a part of YOUR lawsuit.
