Gunsmith trigger job or Apex on my M&P9?

I never realized how gritty the trigger was in my M&P until I fired my new Beretta 92FS compact with added Wilson Combat short reach trigger, then fired my M&P full size 9mm. So, I want to improve the trigger.

My gunsmith says he can smooth it out with some polishing, he did not talk about price, but he is very reasonable. I would like to give him the business, but if the Apex would be smoother, I will go that route.

Thanks for any suggestions.

If your gunsmith knows his craft, I'd have him do it.

If not, I'd find a gunsmith who knows his craft.

I'm not a 'do it yourself' advocate when it comes to firearms.

I've seen too many home done work to think I am good enough at messing with firearms to 'do it myself' on a deadly weapon.

I might do it to sell, but not to use myself.

Just my opinion, of course.

I had my trigger worked on by one of the S&W remote smiths here in Texas. I asked him to smooth the trigger and go no lower than 5 1/2 lbs on the pull. He smoothed the trigger and put the pull at 6 lbs, and told me after shooting a while it would get lighter. I am pleased with his work. I can't personally speak about the Apex solution as I have never lived the experience.

Had the APEX FSS and Trigger installed on my MP9C
What a difference
It is almost the same as my Ruger SR1911
I had my 79 year old wife dry fire both and she said the APEX was lighter --take up was about the same
Cost me $225 with a S&W armorer at the LGS doing the work

The initial grit goes away with shooting, or you can smooth the striker block and trigger linkage, where are most of the initial grit.

Thanks for the quick replies. I have to admit, I have only put about 200 rounds through the gun, so it will probably get better. I may just let him do some minor polishing on it and see how it goes. Although with the spectacular reviews on the Apex, it sure is tempting.

I put an apex completion trigger kit in my pro9 and like it a lot. Easy to do and after some rounds down the pipe it seems to have settled in at under three lbs. This only a range/game gun, so lighter is better. I would do it again in a heartbeat it changed the gun that much. If you decide to go the apex route feel free to change the sights if you desire since you have to remove the rear one to install the kit. As an added bonus I was able to put my pro trigger in my compact for an upgrade there as well. That turned into a nice smooth five lb trigger.

I have the Apex Poly FSS kit in my FS 9.
I honestly cannot describe how much better the trigger is with this kit! It truly is amazing.
I have a 9c I will be putting the same kit in when I have the funds.

Just put the apex poly fss kit in my 40c and all I can say is "HOLY ****"!
Been shooting 1911 with custom trigger jobs for 40 years and Apex is close than anything else I've ever shot.

One thing to be sure you keep in mind is that some of the grit comes from the crosscut channels the strike block rides in (one vertical that the block runs up and down in, one horizontal that allows the block to engage striker). Crosscutting can lab burrs and sharp edges. Make sure you polish these areas along with the trigger bar and striker block. If you go apex you might want to have your Smith install it, not because you can't, but because he (or she -- meet a really good lady Smith just recently) can take the opportunity to polish everything at same time.

I have an SR1911 and the APEX in the MP9C
Be hard pressed to pick one over the other
Wished I had the MP9C with the thumb safety
I am seriously thinking of having one installed so the 2 guns would be alike in operation

Have the FSS in both my M&P 40 & 9, love the way the trigger feels. No way in the world to fix that hinged trigger, except the Apex FSS!

I put the APEX in my 9c and had some light strike problems, took it to Doug at ATEi who not only fixed that problem, but also did my M&P 9 trigger. Start to finish under 10 minutes, just as nice a trigger at ⅓ the cost and that included fixing the 9c.

The M&P 9FS I bought last summer was pretty gritty out of the box but probably 6.5 -7 lbs. 200 rounds later the grit was gone. Its over 2k now and while not exactly a competetion trigger, it's decent for a stock polymer framed pistol.

For me, the question wasn't do I modify the gun or not. It was do I make permanent changes or not. Once a gunsmith grinds something, there's no turning back from that. I went with the apex parts because nothing was permanent. I really do like my guns with the apex parts in them. All 5 of my M&P have apex kits in them. I will say though that the polymer triggers are much easier to install them the aluminum apex triggers.

Since there may be a Shield in my future, I'm interested in this thread.

I've heard that the Shield may have a more refined trigger pull than its larger brothers. Would it pay to embark on an Apex installation from the outset or is it likely to be good enough for both SD and the range work that goes with either OC or CC?

Hope I'm not hijacking the intent of this thread.

I personally think my factory shield trigger is great. Is it the best trigger I've ever used, no. But perfectly fine for a CC gun and fine to shoot a cpl hundred rds at the range.

I noticed you can purchase the Apex kit with or without their trigger. Is there a real benefit to their polymer trigger over the factory trigger for the extra $45?

The Apex trigger isn't hinged like the factory trigger, it's like a Glock with the center blade.

Thanks, I had not seen a picture of it but should be better than the hinge setup.

Mine was test fired on 7/12. Does anyone know if I should put the RAM in at the same time as the trigger kit?
