Gunsmithing Screwdriver Set

Regarding the Brownell's set:

1 - What are the differences in the handles: Law Enforcement, Hollow, # 81? Any preference for what reason?

2 - Are any of the sets, truly complete? In other words, I don't have to buy any add-ons from Brownells?

thanks

The hollow is a longer handle and is handy because it can store bits in the hollow cavity for a trip to the range. The Law enforcement/armorer's handle is shorter and the bits clip in a little more secure. It's a handy size in that it gives less leverage than the hollow handle, which equates to less chance of slipping off a screw head. I typically use either this handle or the stubby handle when working on guns. Plus the stubby often comes in handy on other projects around the house.

Brownell's makes a master set, but even it doesn't include specialty bits like the one for removal of grip screws from 1911 frames, or the slotted screws for rear blade replacements on S&W revolver sights.

I agree with Cholla about the Brownells "fixed blade" screwdrivers. The grinding is wrong. Too shallow.....which leaves a shoulder that contacts the top of the screw slot, and prohibits the blade from bottoming out properly in the slot.

The newer "magna-tip" bits don't seem to have this problem. The law enforcement handle seems to balance pretty well, although I use a traditional, light weight screwdriver for sideplate screws as it is a little easier for me to control. You'll have to experiment with which bits you need, and the ones that fit the best in the firearms you normally work on. The bits are available for purchase separately....or in sets designed/dedicated to one particular manufacturer.

The magna handle with the storage compartment in it is a great idea for the range bag or tool box.

I've had the Chapman set for years, and really like it, but I came in to a little unexpected, unencumbered cash and just ordered the Brownell's 22 bit starter set. Looking forward to receiving it . . .

Had to go out of town unexpectedly for the last couple days of the week, so I didn't get to pick up the Brownell's set at the office until yesterday. I am already unhappy that I didn't order the larger bit set, and I now have the expansion pack in the cart at Brownell's. The LE handle is perfect. The full sized grip is nice, but shorter extension lets you work closer to the gun, which I really like.
