Guy tattoos his dog!!!!

Putting a heart with an arrow through it on the dog's shoulder - that's ridiculous.

But tattooing a dog? Before they invented "the chip", that was how you identified your dog.

Our beagles were tattooed in the left ear. I've seen dogs with the owner ID tattooed on the inside of the upper lip.

Ain't nothin' wrong with putting a tattoo on a dog. Beats branding 'em with a hot iron, like they do cows and horses.

hmmnnn...I thought you identified your dog by having a disc engraved with the dog's name attached to the collar...

that's one way and it works until that or the collar falls off...our dog just recently got shipped, snipped(i'm the only guy in the house again...lol). we are considering having the tattoo done also as we have been told that chip readers don't read all chips.

i have tattoos, but i would never do it to a dog...but it is not much different than any of those idiots that put clothes on their dogs or carry them in purses. the pain of the tattoo only lasts a few hours, if that and will be covered with hair in no time, whereas the embarrassment of being clothed and in a purse never ends

All my dogs are kennel tattooed for identification and they have implanted microchips. The tats are small numbers along with the kennel's initials on their bellies (now covered over with hair). If this guy did anything more than that to his dog, he should be charged / fined big time with animal cruelty and have the dog seized by the state officers.

Mac, this wasn't for Skipper, in the back yard, who might get out and go over to the next block. This was a pack of hounds running game in the woods. Them little tags hanging on the collar have a tendency to get lost.

And if your dog is a good enough dog, people have been known to put a new collar on it and claim it is their dog.

Permanent markings are a good plan on expensive hunting dogs.

ID tattoos I understand. What that cretin did is disgusting, not so much for the temporary pain of the work as for what it says about the "artist's" considering his dog a way to make himself look cool.

I have an intense dislike of people who regard their dogs, whether teacup Yorkies in $500 purses or burly pit bulls with spiked collars, as fashion accessories.

All we ever had, were metal tags on the dogs collar. Even if the collar fell off (which happened only once) people still knew whose dog it was. He never strayed more than a block from the house--we never had a fence all around the house--just a partial-to block the view of the alley behind the house.

I know of one person who recovered his dog and consequently caught a dog thief by the ID tatoo on the inside of the dog's leg. Alot of hunters ID tatoo their dogs because a polished hunting dog can cost 2K or so. The amount of effort and training put into a dog only to have it stolen can be devastating.

My (former) hunting partner had his Brittany stolen from his home. They opened the gate and took the dog. The dog was a well established hunter with a few season under her belt.

I would not do something like that to Pugsters, nor would I clip her ears or chop off her tail. I would also not make her suffer through all kinds of stuff that professional dog show people do with their dogs, including those humiliating haircuts :D. I don't think much of a lot of things people do with their dogs. But as long as the dog is fed and sheltered and isn't otherwise abused, then I figure it ain't none of my business.

The dog owner in this case was providing a pricey surgery for his dog. Lots of dog owners will not pay for that kind of thing and just let the dog die.

I wonder how many are outraged at the cruelty of a tattoo but chopping off a dog's nuts is just fine. Ask the dog. ;)

A good friend had to have the nose on a Lab tattoed black. He was constantly getting his nose sunburned due to pigment loss. (I suggested a nose ring too,).

The dog was at the vet and under anesthesia for a procedure. I don't have a dog in this fight, lol, pun intended, but don't think it's a capitol offense. I am sure the guy loves his dog, maybe just not the smartest thing to do. The real abusers are running puppy mills and breading fighting dogs.

This story has been posted on other sites & that seems to be something a lot of people miss. The guy obviously has a lot of love for his dog and considers him family.

A lot of people also seem to miss that the tatt was done while the dog was asleep.

Ummm... I would have probably gone with something a bit less cliche than the pierced heart, though. ;)

There are benefits to neutering but that's for another thread. :p

Docking ears & tails now...

Oh sure. Pugsters... come here girl... lay down and hold still for a tatt. Yeah... that would work out about as well as 2y/o run amok with a Magic Marker:D. I think we had a thread here with a photo result of that.
