Guys need some honest help

Well I found a 642 and a 638 for 300. Possibly lower after mail in rebate so I'm going to take the advice and purchase one of those. I like the fact that both guns (new one and one a friend gives me) will be the same caliber. The one he is giving me needs to be refinished but is shootable. It's an old wood grip Taurus.

I have carried 642 for the past five years. It is wonderful for concealment. I is my LEAST favorite gun to shoot I own. But at this time in my life (where I live, still working, etc) I will continue. When I retire and have more control of my wardrobe, I plan to carry something larger.

Ok guys thanks for all the help, I went to my lgs this morning and put my hands on all of them. I will be going with the full size. It felt great and was (to me) more comfortable than the shield. Felt like I had to stretch my hand on it. The full size really felt better than a glock (again that's me). I will be going with it and after I get me conceal carry I will go with a j frame. My friend brought me his revolver so i have that option as well. Thanks for everyone's help. Now I just have to hunt done some holsters

Makes sense.

A hammerless snub for concealed carry: great to respond with to quick, close, reactive scenarios you can't avoid. At longer ranges, you probably can simply flee the scene.

A full size auto for home defense: less concerns about ECQ, usually more warning in HD, there might be multiple intruders possibly armed, have to make a stand/can't escape.

You did well.
The only way to pick the right one is to handle it personally.
It has to fit YOU correctly.
I like 1911's but they don't fit my hand .
Revolvers have more latitude in that grips can affect the proper grip and are easily changed.

Thanks guys now just to decide which comes first! I will be getting my CCW later this year and would be next year before I could get the other gun. Do I go with the full size or go j frame and shoot it till I get comfortable with it for my CCW? I swear this is worse than buying a new truck!

Personally, I'd go with the full size first and get the J frame later.
Being able to protect home and hearth (while building skills with the firearm) makes more sense to me.

You can save up for the J frame in the interim and maybe train with one if you have a buddy that will let you shoot his. This way you'll be prepared when it comes time to carry.

O.K., here's my never-humble opinion.

1.First, TRY before buying.

2. Gun manufacturers have spent million$ to make the autoloader as safe and reliable as a revolver, and they have succeeded, for the most part. My personal concern is, that having shot only revolvers for 40 + years, with the exception of a Ruger .22 autopistol, the transition might be a problem in a stressful situation.

3. Physical capability: It is difficult for me to rack the slide on some poular autopistols. (See #1)

4. I like steel J frame guns, because of the extra weight, but the original grips are small for me.
That is easily fixed by buying larger grips, or even a larger K frame gun, which are not all that difficult to conceal.

5. Don't buy ugly, even if it is cheap...you will not be satisfied. (Don't ask!);)

Thanks, yea I like both the j frame and the full size. The full size is used le trade in but the j frame is new and is 310 possibly 280 after said and done. The full size is 270

In terms of which to get first, I would probably get the snub. It can fill multiple roles better IMO. You can carry a full size semi-auto, but not too many people do.

My 642 is my always handy/always with me, 24/7 gun. Home invasions can occur at anytime of the day or night and you might not be anywhere near where you keep your full size auto. Plus there are everday tasks like getting the mail, taking out trash, walking the dog, answering the door where it's really no inconvenience to have a light snub revolver in your pocket.

I'll even usually defer to the snub for investigating the proverbial bump in the night(likely nothing, but just want to be sure so I can get back to sleep), since if it does happen to be an intruder that has gained entry into the home and is hiding, a contact fight is much more likely. There is no mistaking someone(s) kicking in your door in the middle of the night and in that scenario, I would grab my bedside Glock, although if all I had was a snub, I would not necessarily feel under gunned.

Concealed Carry Tactics to Neutralize a Home Invasion

Yes I feel confident in shooting a snubbie as I have owned one in the past. I have owned full size guns as well. My main concern is CCW when I have to dress nice. Also I thought maybe the wife would like it better since it's small. I'm still getting here used to guns, she was scared of them when we first got married. I think the j frame would probably be carried more than the full size and I do have a 12 gauge I keep at home as well.

Since I will be getting my CCW before I buy the other gun i also figured maybe get the j frame first since again I'd probably never leave without it. Also it would give me some time to shoot it and feel confident and build my skills. Them maybe by the time I do get ready to purchase a full size I could afford to buy new instead of used

Guys thanks I'm going with the full size for sure now. Later after I get my CCW I will save up for either the jframe or maybe a compact who knows. But at that time I'll know which way to go. Thanks for all your help.
