I keep looking at those "high dollar" pistols but when I compare them to my M&P .40c they just don't win.
Width and weight are much less on the M&P. Trigger? no comparison.
And when I look at sub compact pistols, the Shield wins hands down.
I've tried to spend some big bucks. But I seem to have the clear winners already. :p

I prefer the Sig P226 over the M&P but own and shoot both. The Sig trigger is much better if you don't fear the double action first shot.As for sub compact pistols I have no use for them.I prefer full size service pistols for ccw and all around use.

There are a lot of pistols I enjoy. Some I like to look at more than shoot, some are just "cool" and fine for the occasional range visit, and others are what I take to training courses, practice with regularly, and would bet my life on.

For me the only pistol that falls into the last category is the M&P, but I would also put GLOCK in that category if I couldn't choose an M&P.

HKs, and Sigs are some of the coolest pistols, and I really like them, but I can't drive them as fast and I'm just as accurate with the M&P as those high dollar pistols. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of great pistols out there, and if I had to carry a Sig in a duty or WROL scenario I'd be comfortable with it, but I would know that I would be at a bit of a disadvantage when compared to the M&P.

I would only change 3 things if I controlled S&W:
1. Lighten the duty trigger by maybe half a pound (I'm fine with the stock 2013 triggers...love em actually, but a lot of people would be more comfortable with a little lighter trigger)

2. Stipple the frame or change the texturing to make some traction in all conditions

3. Remove that stupid hole in the chamber and frame that can let sand and other debris into the action which could cause failures. I think this will be one of the primary things that keeps the M&P out of the hands of US military. it's useless in low light any way..

I like my M&P, but my Sig2022 pretty much wipes the floor with it in every category but looking cool...

C'mon! The 2022 is a good pisol, but it certainly doesn't wipe the floor with the M&P! Well, maybe it does for you, in your hands, but the 2022 is not inherently better than the M&P in any category I can think of. The P series Sigs don't even wipe the floor with the M&P.

I guess it's all user preference when you start comparing high quality firearms though. More up to the person and not the gun.

My issued Sig is still in the box in my locker. Too many malfunctions... My M&P comes out with me every night. No problems at all.

I love to shoot a lot my two M&Ps and carry the compact very often but there is no comparisson to my Sig P226 TACOPS or my CZ-75B.

The only way it doesn't compare is the frame is polymer and the 226 and CZ 75B are metal. As for operating the pistols the M&P compares just fine...favorable in some respects.

As an owner or former owner of each of those I can say the M&P is more ergonomic(for me), has a lower bore axis, is lighter weight, holds more ammo, allows a faster first shot (for me), has a better trigger (than the 75B, better than both for first shot since sig will be DA), has less perceived recoil (for me), is easier to maintain (requires less cleaning, not as many spring changes to worry about), can be run dirty longer (better than 75B, Sig is less particular/ on par with M&P), doesnt wear as fast, and has a higher quality finish (than the 75B). Oh, and it costs less (than the Sig), and is more available then the CZ.

That said, I still am very fond of both the 75B and the P226. The 75B can be transformed into a very nice pistol with some cajun gun works or CZ Custom parts, but then you start to get into the Sig price range if not quite a bit higher.

Well it's all personal preference I guess. I'll take the M&P any day over the Sig I fired but will admit it has only been the P2022. I seem to just always prefer striker fired pistols. I'm not knocking the others it's just my preference.

And after looking closely at the Walther PPQ I have decided against it because of the slide release. M&P wins yet again.

I'm not sure what Sig's you all have been shooting, but I've never heard of the number of issues the M&P line has experienced happening with Sig's. I can't speak to the 2000 line, but keep in mind they are the absolute bottom of the barrel when it comes to Sig. Personally, I've never experienced a single malfunction out of Sig pistol, and I've shot a bunch of them and owned 4. I've owned several HK's and they have been good pistols, but not 100% reliable. Never owned a M&P, but then again, I don't care for striker fired pistols (my PSP excluded).

You need to do more than "look" at those "high dollar" pistols to do a fair comparision. Some models just fit better than others but not always for the same guy. Sometimes I take my HK or Sig to the range with my M&P and enjoy the refinements and qualities of each...

I love the HKs in the LEM package but i despise their mag prices and parts) and the fact that everything is so proprietary to each individual handgun line. I do own one, a USP 9 but only because i got it for a steal.

I wont touch Sigs if they are 100% US made. For a while their QC went down the drain.

If youre gonna buy only ONE handgun, HK P30 is very hard to beat. If you want the HK fit for 1/2 the $ its the PPQ. But if you want a good quality gun but dont want the European style controls the M&P .....and Glock ..yes Glock ....are hard to beat

The only SA/DA gun I would consider is the HK USP with the LEM trigger.

And even the LEM is much different than a typical striker fired gun. DA/SA is going the way of the dodo bird. My first handgun was a USPc .45 variant 1, very well built gun, very reliable but when push came to shove in training with it, I shot circles around it with my old Glock 19 and it all came down to a striker fired trigger to thank.

The only trigger that is better than a striker fired gun is a nice 1911 SA trigger, of course that gun also requires an external thumb safety which is a dealbreaker for me, at least on a defensive gun.

You can carry your 1911 - particularly one with a firing pin safety - in "Condition Zero," just as you do with a loaded Springfield XD. In a good holster that intercepts the hammer, it is probably as safe, if not safer. I wouldn't do it (there is no reason to), but I don't see it as being much different.

Back to the OP, M&Ps and Glocks are hard to beat if all you want is a tool. Have to agree they hold a lot of ammunition and throw it down range with good reliability and accuracy - at a reasonable price. You can do worse. :)

da/sa big deal

growing up and cutting my teeth on single action revolvers, then da revolvers, cocking a hammer, or firing in da mode has become second nature and is really not a biggie to re-learn on a semi. with the sigs you can just cock the hammer and go sa all the way. comparing sigs and hk's to an m&p is like comparing bmw's or Mercedes to a ford fiesta, or a Les Baer 1911 with a stock LLama 1911 imo. steel vs polymer, no contest. whatever YOU shoot best is what really matters. so use that. no need to bash what works for someone else.

If I could only have one handgun it would be the HK P30. The ergonomics can't be beat. When I first I held one it just seemed to fit my hand like a glove. It shoots great! However, It's too big for me to carry, so, my carry peice is my greatl little shield... Someday, I'll get a P30.
