I bought my L-Comp from another forum member last year and have been really pleased with it overall but there were a couple of things that I wanted to change. First, when loading with moonclips one or two rounds would hang up on the case mouth so I wanted the charge holes to be chamfered a bit more aggressively than they did at the factory. Second, the edge of the cylinder face was so sharp it would catch on my holster so reholstering wasn't very smooth, I'd have to wiggle the gun to get it in the holster. Third, the factory finish left a lot to be desired, I didn't like the flat "blue" and it seemed rather thin and prone to scratches. Lastly, I always thought it was a bit plain and could use a little "something".

So, I took it to a gunsmith that has done other work for me, Dietrich Gunsmithy in Otis , ME. Rob is the 'smith, he's a very talented young man and he's in business with his Dad, Wayne. I told them what I wanted - charge holes chamfered, cylinder face beveled, and since the cylinder would need to be refinished I asked him to parkerize the whole gun. I like the durability and the "all business" look of a parkerized finish. Also, when I had some work done on a J-frame another 'smith had polished the trigger and I love the smooth feel and the look of the polished metal so I asked them to smooth and polish the trigger and to polish the hammer to match.

I've added photos so you can see the work they did, I think it came out great and I'm very happy with it. I qualified with it last Friday and was again amazed at the accuracy and "shootability" of the gun. In fact I shot better with it than my new 1911 9mm Pro Series. We shoot a 50 round course of fire twice, back to back, and I managed a perfect 50/50 the first time through and a 49/50 the second with the L-Comp (shot 47/50 and 48/50 with the 1911).

Finally, after looking long and hard for a set of wood grips that would fit and feel right (I've tried a few different sets on it) I took the plunge and bought a set of Nill Griffe grips. They are beautiful, fit perfectly, and feel amazing in the hand. They just arrived today so I haven't had a chance to shoot it with them but I think they'll be very comfortable.

Soooo, not big changes, but what do you guys think?

I like your mods. The finish is not real pretty to look at but for a working/carry gun I see the purpose, form before beauty. And that's OK.

Beautiful revo...can you tell me what model Nills those are?

Thanks for the compliments everyone!

I actually don't know the model number, I couldn't find them on their web site, they may be a discontinued model. I got them off of Ebay and the seller had 5 sets left (now 4), the Ebay item number is 380209107734.

This what the label on the package says -
KN Nill-Griffe
Art.Nr.: SW03FS1
S&W K/L-Rahmen round butt
Frankonia- Style Glatt

There was an instruction sheet included but it's all in german, I don't know what it says.

Got rid of mine a few months ago - just one thing I could not and cannot get over.

I understand why you did those mods - mine had the same flaws - you did good - that gun is made to work and the finish is super, compared to the stuff S&W did.

Nice job.

Thanks for the compliments. Which thing couldn't/can't you get over?

I like what you did with the gun. The only thing I don't like is the barrel. I just think it looks akward with the port out front of the sight. I wish S&W didn't do that to some otherwise fine revolvers. As for your mods - they are great!

Yeah, the set back front sight is a bit odd looking but you don't notice it when shooting the gun. This is the only ported gun I own and was concerned about it initially, mostly whether or not it would make a difference. After shooting the gun I have to say that the port makes a huge difference in recoil, muzzle rise, and control. .38's have very little recoil and almost no muzzle flip and full house .357 loads recoil straight back into your hand, again with very little muzzle rise. It is an easy gun to shoot fast and accurately thanks to the port.

I haven't shot it in full darkness but so far I have not noticed an excessive increase in muzzle blast, though it is loud (but what .357 isn't).

Looks great to me!

Did it come with the "night sight" front sight?

Yeah, it's got the night sight but I'm not too impressed. Since it's only the front there isn't really anything to line it up with. The XS front night sight and C&S Extreme Duty fixed rear sight combo on my 315 Night Guard work much better in low light. I may purchase the same combo for the L-Comp.

Man I love that gun. Would be a great general purpose outfit. Good for both hunting, plinking, everyday carry. Everything. I love it!

What kind of leather you sticking it in?
