I bought my L-Comp from another forum member last year and have been really pleased with it overall but there were a couple of things that I wanted to change. First, when loading with moonclips one or two rounds would hang up on the case mouth so I wanted the charge holes to be chamfered a bit more aggressively than they did at the factory. Second, the edge of the cylinder face was so sharp it would catch on my holster so reholstering wasn't very smooth, I'd have to wiggle the gun to get it in the holster. Third, the factory finish left a lot to be desired, I didn't like the flat "blue" and it seemed rather thin and prone to scratches. Lastly, I always thought it was a bit plain and could use a little "something".
So, I took it to a gunsmith that has done other work for me, Dietrich Gunsmithy in Otis , ME. Rob is the 'smith, he's a very talented young man and he's in business with his Dad, Wayne. I told them what I wanted - charge holes chamfered, cylinder face beveled, and since the cylinder would need to be refinished I asked him to parkerize the whole gun. I like the durability and the "all business" look of a parkerized finish. Also, when I had some work done on a J-frame another 'smith had polished the trigger and I love the smooth feel and the look of the polished metal so I asked them to smooth and polish the trigger and to polish the hammer to match.
I've added photos so you can see the work they did, I think it came out great and I'm very happy with it. I qualified with it last Friday and was again amazed at the accuracy and "shootability" of the gun. In fact I shot better with it than my new 1911 9mm Pro Series. We shoot a 50 round course of fire twice, back to back, and I managed a perfect 50/50 the first time through and a 49/50 the second with the L-Comp (shot 47/50 and 48/50 with the 1911).
Finally, after looking long and hard for a set of wood grips that would fit and feel right (I've tried a few different sets on it) I took the plunge and bought a set of Nill Griffe grips. They are beautiful, fit perfectly, and feel amazing in the hand. They just arrived today so I haven't had a chance to shoot it with them but I think they'll be very comfortable.
Soooo, not big changes, but what do you guys think?
