HAD A VISITOR IN MY POOL SATURDAY - NOT WELCOME EITHER!

Chief, You need to install a depth charge dispenser to handle those water borne threats.

When a boy and swimming in the local clear running creeks, I have been in the water with my share of snakes. As a teenager we used cherry bombs
and M80's as depth charges. Occasionally lift a snake out of the water by
several inches.
I will admit to a few mad snakes running me out of the creek or to
a different swimming hole.

Are you sure it wasn't a scarlet kingsnake (14 to 20 inches)?

If it was a coral snake it would have died (2 to 3 feet):

What state are you in?

SWFL - and there was no white on it at all. Yes, positive it was a Coral snake.

You don't post where Fl. You live, but I'd bet good money your subdivision/development is
Less than three years old. At the rate Florida's developing and the influx of new residents this state's gonna be paved over in 20 years.
The reason for you seeing all these critters is You moved into Their backyard. Their being squeezed out of habitat.

My house is 17 months old and yes, the development is only about 3 years old.

Coral Snakes.....

You have to really tick them off to bite you. Their fangs/teeth/whatever are very small and they have to chew on a soft part to penetrate at tall.

They are of the same family as cobras and kraits IIRC and their venom is highly dangerous.

I've seen a few in my lifetime...but only a few. They are supposed to be quite common in my part of the world (FWIW in Harris County the most commonly found poisonous snake is the copperhead...seen LOTS of them).

I have never seen one more than a foot or so long and about as big around as a #2 pencil...and yes, they were Coral snakes.

I apprieciate them from a distance.

I'm in the country. When I first built my pool I believe I caught every snake and frog within a half mile radius of my house. You had be really careful when you opened the tops of the skimmer baskets.
Not a snake but pulled open the skimmer and had a dead rabbit floating on the top. Quite a shock when you're expecting a few worms.

You guys are making me rethink moving to Texas. I wonder what housing prices in Antarctica are like?

We have had Rattler's here too! Rattler's are larger so they are a little easier to spot. The Coral Snakes are way smaller and hard to see in the grass. Rattler's usually at least warn you they are there by making their noise. While I am no expert, I don't think they actually have an antidote for Coral Snake bites.

I would not want to tangle with any of them!!! Below is the Rattler that came to visit last spring. He was thankfully on the outside of the screening.

Don't know where you live but I believe coral snakes are a western species but you have alligators also.
Could be you saw a milk snake. Harmless.

Red and Yellow=Kill a Fellow; Red and Black=Friend of Jack.

I grew-up in SE Florida. I learned it as a kid,
Red TOUCH yellow, KILL a fellow, and
HEAD is black? LOOK OUT, Jack!

My neighborhood was well-established long before we ever moved-in. I did come face-to-face with what I believe was a copperhead...once...but I didn't remain still long enough to be certain. Other than that, just squirrels and the occasional possum.

We had a pool at our previous house. I came home late one night and noticed something in the pool. It was a possum swimming laps. I went to get the pole with the leaf skimmer on it, looking forward to a "fun time" trying to fish him out. I needn't have bothered. At that moment, he saw me and immediately swam to the ladder. He climbed out easily, walked directly past me, paying me no attention, went up some steps, then down the sidewalk and out the front gate. Apparently he was a "regular" at our pool, because he had his routine down pat.
