Had the slide stops on 2 M&P 40's break, S&W repair turnaround time?

Hi,

My wife and I took a defensive pistol course during which the slide stops on both of our M&P 40's broke (completely fractured where the stop connects to the thumb release button) after about 500 rounds. Mine was a compact and blew off on both sides, her's a .40 pro 5". Both pistols probably had about 3500-4500 rounds down them all in all. We were able to continue shooting, I just couldn't lock back unless we had an empty mag in the pistol (she barely noticed hers because just the left side came off and she's left handed).

Anyway, not having a vice and punches and being a pretty terrible shadetree gunsmith, I elected to just have the guns sent back to S&W. It's been a few weeks, has anyone else sent an M&P to them recently, and if so, how long did it take to get it back?

Sent a Shield in. Took about 2-3 weeks turn around but the rep said SW were rushing to get all repairs done before their holiday.

It depends on how much repair queue is present before they get to yours. I wouldn't worry or rush the repair unless it's your only pistol.

Contact SW on the progress for an update.

Thanks. We have 6 M&P's in all so we're ok but the compact is my main carry gun so I miss it a bit, ccw'ing a full size in the meantime. Will call if it gets to be a month or so.

They must of been the old type slide lock. The new ones are beefed up . I always use the sling shot method to release the slide never had a problem but I know its hard to thumb the slide lock down . Smith will fix you up .

Yeah I believe both pistols were purchased in 2011, maybe 2012 for the 5".

I have a .40 pro CORE 5" that I believe has the newer slide stop, purchased in 2013. It definitely has a more positive reset, and I shot it a bit at the class with no problems.

Hopefully S&W puts the newer slide stops onto the two M&P's I sent them. I've been keeping an eye on the M&P armorer pacckage from G&R, seeing as I have half a dozen of the pistols and parts breakages are inevitable. S&W M&P Armorer Package at G and R Tactical

Hopefully they get them back in stock some day.

Right now they have had my M & P 22C for 4 weeks. All it needed was the pin that runs through the slide to be repaired since it was walking out while shooting. So it was a pretty minor repair.

Walking out may be a problem with the slide and not the pin

Someone else posted a picture of the same problem as mine. I own two 22C's. One I bought last year and one four months ago. Both have the pins walking out. The newest one started with around 800 rounds through it. I'm waiting to see what they say the problem is with both

Turnaround time was 3 weeks to inspect, repair and ship my .45 Shield. S&W replaced the slide stop.

I just got an email that the gun is on the way back. So we are talking 4 weeks for this repair.

For those that have had their's break as well, instead of sending it back, order the upgraded slide stop from G&R, and install it yourself. You don't need a vice, and it's very easy to do. All you need is a punch to punch the pins out.

G and R has been out of the slide stops for awhile, at least for the past 3-4 weeks or so I've been looking. S&W actually said they'd be willing to mail the slide stop parts to me to put in myself though.

Are you serious? I asked them to send me one as well, and they wouldn't.

Well, I'm not 100% sure, but I explained my problem to the tech support man and he said "are you asking me to send you some new slide stops?" and I said "no, I'd prefer to send it in for you to do it."

I guess he might've said "we're not allowed to send you any" if I had responded "yes", not sure.

Got my 2 M&P's back about 10 days ago, turnaround was about 4 weeks.

Incidentally I noticed the trigger pull on my compact increased from 5.5 to about 6.5 pounds with the new slide stop, although it settled down to about 6 pounds after 300 rounds of shooting. The upside is a more positive reset with a bit of an audible click.

Function checked it at the range and it was shooting pretty good at 25 yd, offhand, a 3" group, shooting about 4" groups 5 shot average.

Had same problem with my 40 Pro 5" at 15,000 rounds. Repair took about three weeks at no cost to me.

Why not just buy a slide stop from Brownell's for $21 and change it out yourself or keep one as a spare like I do. Better than sending your gun in IMO.

Because last I checked, Brownells only has the Gen 1 slide stop and I would prefer to get the latest slide stop so that it has a lower chance of breaking again in the future.
