As a life long Vikings fan, I feel so sorry for the Packers, (sarcasm) in case nobody caught it.

I would think that a Minnesota Viking fan would keep their distance from any threat about the Hail Mary Pass. Back then I was a Cowboys fan and watched the game on Television. As Staubach team mates would later state, they never felt they were out of it as long as Staubach was on the field.

It has to bring back nightmarish memories of that day December 28, 1975, of long ago when it was fourth down and very long with no time outs, with 32 seconds left in the game and Minnesota had the lead 14-19. With the Cowboys on their own end of the field and out of field goal range and a field goal would not help anyway the Minnesota fans were already celebrating their victory.

However, they should not have counted the Cowboys out prematurely as Roger Staubach starting on his own 45 yard line, lined up in a shotgun formation and rolled wide to his right and under serious pressure, let go of a 54 yard pass to a double covered Drew Pearson streaking towards the Minnesota goal line, and who broke free just as the ball sailed over his shoulder and into his arms so he never had to break stride.

Of course Stauback could only listen to the play as he was being pounding into the turf a fraction of a second after the ball left his hand. Stauback being Catholic Howard Cosell could not restrain himself from naming it the Hail Mary. From the Catholic line Hail Mary, full of grace.

Minnesota fans could barely be consoled as they threw bottles and other items out onto the field as the Cowboys lined up for the extra point and the final kickoff.

Staubach suffered several concussions in his career as he was prone to hold the ball until the last possible second before releasing his passes to give his receivers that extra second to get free.

There is a school of thought that holds it was the refs' failure to call offensive interference that ignited the fans. Either way, that one still rankles. And the Vikes have remained no stranger to snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.
