Half the Holy Grail Pre 24

......snip......

Good luck finding the other revolver. I've been looking, for 15 years or more, for S118087, a standard 4" 44 special. It has to be somewhere, but I've never seen it offered for sale.

Regards, Mike Priwer

Missed it by thaaat much. Here's S118227:

...Smith and Wesson 44 target model of 1950 Pre 24... 3 1/2 inch barrel... Bill Cross commented that he knew there was a consecutive pair... I just received a letter on this gun and it is one of the consecutive serial number pair that were made.

Roll mark looks centered to me.

Great gun. I love the 3.5"ers, it's just that all of mine have smaller holes in the barrels and cylinders.:D Thank you for sharing that 44 with the rest of us and good luck in the hunt for its mate.

All the best,

This is like rubbing salt in the wound - LOL. I saw this revolver when it was first offered for sale on another forum, at a very reasonable price.

Posts were going back and forth as to whether this came with the 3 1/2" barrel from the factory or not. All kinds of arguments back and forth. I came this close I--I to saying "I'll take it" just to shut everybody up. But I didn't, and the next thing you know, I'm reading about it on the this forum. AAARRRRGGGGHHHH!

I'll regret that decision the rest of my life. Truly a great find and I wish you luck in finding its mate.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

The 2nd letter is icing on the cake. Now you know the # of its stablemate.

Since there was no extra cost for the bright blue finish, it tells us it was manufactured after the bright blue finish became standard again and is backed up by the 1956 ship date. Also it will not have a large B following the barrel # which would also confirm the bright finish was not an extra cost option from the period following the war before the bright blue was standard.

Regarding the centered roll marks on the barrel, I surmise after it was cut from a standard barrel length either before being roll marked or was re-roll marked.

Specific guns like its mate are near impossible to find. Add to that the possibility of having been ruined/destroyed in a natural disaster; house fire, flood, hurricane, tornado, etc.

But I'll be keeping my open for it, for you.
