Has everyone made their first run at the Halloween candy? I say first run because we always get a couple of big bags early to beat the rush, then my son and I eat it all before Halloween. We are left scrambling to find some more bags for all the trick or treaters we get.

I do regret to report that the bags we bought of the mini chocolate bars, truly have mini bars in them this year. I guess in spirit of the times with inflation and supply chain issues, the small candy bars have been shrunk to about one inch. Funny, I remember the rampant inflation of the 70's and 18 or 20% interest rates, and I don't remember chocolate bars shrinking. And I can assure you my waist size has not shrunk any!

I bought my first big bag months ago and stuck it in the bottom drawer of the refrigerator because a lot of noise was being made about supplies of Halloween candy. To keep out of the big bag I bought a couple smaller bags of what I considered "specialty" candy so that I will keep away from the big bag I bought for Halloween night. It's a real balancing act between good candy and my diabetes.

I no longer open the door for trick or treaters. No jacko-lantern, porch light off. Sad, always loved it. but since 2 ******* tried to pound my door down some years back, I don't participate any more. A big bag of candy is the LAST thing I need. Hope you all have a nice Halloween. I'll watch The Great Pumpkin and have a wee dram.

With my bad knee I'm too decrepit for getting up and opening the door dozens of times during the evening. So I came up with another routine. I set out one of my kitchen chairs with handrails on the front porch to sit in. With a coat to match the weather and a bucket of candy in my lap, I can stay outside and reach down to fill the kids' bags without any discomfort. Maybe doing this can make Halloween night enjoyable again for you.

I really enjoy Halloween. I could give a rat's earlobe if I get anything the brats want. They want peanut butter with their chocolate, and I believe happiness is achieved once the correct mixture of peanut butter and chocolate is achieved. Any sicko who thinks it's okay to poison kids' candy really needs to come talk with me. Seems we have a major difference in philosophy regarding the safety of the kids I used to try to protect. It was everyone's "unwritten rule" to try to protect our darlings.

I remember as a kid getting full size candy bars.

Couple days ago I bought 3 six packs of full size Butterfinger candy bars.

They were for this kid thou.

Few years ago I bought about 10 pounds of candy for Halloween. I had one kid come to the door. I just shut the lights off now.

We live in a rural area. A few kids around that we know. Sometimes they stop by sometimes they don't. We have a little candy for them but that is about it. If they come by always before dark. We like to be neighborly out of our great memories of Halloween from our long past childhood days.
My wifes church does a Halloween thing and she get candy for that but that is the extent of our involvement these days.
Might be old age but the shine seems to have gone off this event in these troubled times.

We live out a ways too so in recent years we've gone with the grandkids to the 'Fun Night' at the volunteer fire department. Usually some local businesses set up a table to pass out candy and there's a bounce house or two, and old Dr. Styers, a local dentist, is always there passing out packets of travel sized toothpaste with a toothbrush.

It's a safe place for the kids to get a bag full of candy, have some fun, and for the community to get together.

Now that my Grandkids are too old for Trick-Treating and they have moved into different neighborhood, my Bo Days are over.
But like lots of stuff, fun when we did it!

When I first moved into town (about 10 years ago), I finally lived somewhere where I had trick or treaters. The first year or two, I had bunches of kids in costumes and I handed out probably 6 big bags of treats. Then the next couple of years I started to see a bunch of older teens showing up without any type of costumes and in talking to the neighbors, discovered that all these teens were being brought in by the car loads from the other side of town. We also experienced several years where the weather was pretty bad and the numbers of trick or treaters was really down and I wound up with numerous bags of candy left over and it is the last thing I need to have in the house. So now, like several others, I have stopped handing out treats, the costs have gotten out of hand and the unpredictability of the turnout have caused me to "turn out the lights" and usually I just leave the house for a couple hours.
