I am planning on modding my hammer into a speed hammer by grinding down the "hook" on the back side, but I'm a little concerned about leaving the raw metal without a finish on it. My guns spend most of the time in my safe, but I would really hate to take a chance leaving it unfinished and having it rust or having rust spread onto other parts of the receiver. What finish/coating/covering could I use to protect the raw metal of the hammer? Thanks in advance for any info!

I think the cheapest route would be some liquid blueing or a quick spray with Rustoleom rattle can paint.
BTW how you cutting yours?

I thought about Rustoleum but was a little concerned that it might not stick given that the metal will have oil on it all the time. Any special cleaning required to get it to stick?

Most people would clean it with brake cleaner, But be careful it doesn't get on the rest of the hammer as that stuff could take some of that finish off also.

Personally id just use rubbing alcohol and that should get any oil and grease off.
If your worried about it coming off due to gun oil and such, Use the liquid blue.

Wait for some others to chime in also, Im no expert on this.

there is some stuff called cold blueing that works great.. pretty cheap also
