After many years of shooting various S&W revolvers I finally experienced a broken hammer nose. The tip broke off my 64-2 snub while shooting. I have various replacement parts for my revolvers but NOT a single hammer nose. I'm trying to find a replacement and I'm not sure what works. It looks like there were two different versions made for the 64 - pre and post '88? I believe serial number prefix ABP puts it before 1988. Some use springs and some do not. Then there's the Power Custom hammer nose kit which seems to be readily available. Would the Power Custom parts work? This is a carry gun and I'd like to get it back into service ASAP.

You have done some homework. The pre 88 hammer noses are longer. I don't know if the Power Custom ones are short or long. I suspect short. Call and ask them. The spring was added to keep the hammer nose down so it won't catch on the frame at the top as the hammer falls. Some guns have a notch in the frame where the hammer nose would hit to deflect it down. All of these changes were an attempt at keeping the hammer nose from breaking off. Sometimes they break anyway.
