Hammer Rubbing

I was cleaning my 646 the other day and noticed that the hammer looked like it was over to the left rather than center, upon further inspection I noticed that there were rub marks on the hammer and on the left side of the frame it was worst near the top where the hammer strikes the firing pin. The hammer doesn't have any play in it at all so I am guessing that it has been rubbing for awhile and I just haven't noticed.

So now for the question, is there anything I can do to fix this or should I just send it back to Smith & Wesson and let them fix it?

If its not broke, don't fix it.

Its not uncommon to find minor rub marks on the hammer. Its nothing to be concerned about. Thats not just my opinion. They had S&W days at the range/store. I asked the master gunsmith about it, that was the answer given by him also.

Thanks guys I wasn't sure if this was ok or should be taken care of, It rubs all the way up and down the left side that is the main reason I was wondering, I was just thinking it may be causing a heavier than necessary trigger pull. I don't have a gauge so I have no idea how heavy the trigger pull is but it seems heavier than my 686 or 586 however they have hammer mounted pins and both have been shot a ton more than the 646.

You can buy a bearing from brownnells that will fix that.

Since it rubs on the left, try using a non-marring mallet or hammer and tap the hammer slightly to the right. It just may be the hammer pin is a little askew and needs an ajustment. Often a bit of "soft whapping" in the opposite direction fixes it. This is common with the trigger pin as well. Otherwise, as said above, don't worry about it.

Most of my S&W revolvers I've added a .002" shim on the left side of the hammer. Seems common the hammer is left of center. Is it a big deal? No, unless you're running a really light DA pull. Then you don't want anything rubbing/dragging.
