Hammer stud question...

I got this Model 28-2 in a trade several years back while I was living in Atlanta. I did wonder at the time if it had been refinished, but I didn't worry too much about it. Anyway, my question is did S&W ever let any 28-2s leave the factory with the hammer stud visible from the left side like it is on mine. I suspect it has been replaced by what seems to look like a fairly competent gunsmith. But it is visible. It seems I remember seeing a recent thread about a hammer stud that needed replacing. A comment was made by someone that they had the factory replace his hammer stud but he decided against refinishing it. I still don't know for sure if my 28-2 has been refinished at some point but I am pretty sure the hammer stud has been replaced. Your thoughts?

I had a new rebound slide stud replaced on my 28-2. I did not want to have it refinished so the stud end would not show. Mine looks like yours, except location. ( my stud is covered by target grips)

Did the factory perform the repairs?

I had the factory replace a broken hammer stud on my 686-6. Because is was stainless, they had no problem matching the original finish. Of course, blued guns are a whole different problem. I have seen more than a few blued guns with the replaced studs being plainly visible. It's not a big deal though. It looks fine to me. Just a bit of character.

Just the fact that it seems unusually shiny compared to most Highway Patrolmans I have seen.

The gun was repaired - broken Stud. Rather than having to re-blue it, S&W (or anther GS) installed an "old style" Stud in the originals place. While it does show, it allows full repair without refinishing. Older S&W's were manufactured like this and no one minded them so it is considered an "acceptable repair method".

As far as refinishing is concerned, I can't tell if it was refinished or it was a poor attempt to shine it up. I also see scratch marks below the Thumb Latch that look pretty bad. Hard to diagnose precisely over the Internet, however it does look "Bubba'd up a bit. Still, could be a good shooter.

Those aren't scratches, more like oil streak marks. The finish does have some wear, where you are talking about, but no scratches like the way the picture makes it look. I got it to be a shooter. So knowing it definitely didn't leave the factory with the exposed stud makes me feel better about installing the front sight insert. The original hammer and trigger had been polished so I didnt mind replacing them, not even a little bit. It's a great shooter.

When I was really looking for a 28, I saw a lot of them with suspiciously shiny finishes on them, but most of them didn't look refinished to me, but I'm no expert. Some obviously were, most of them were either flatter than the original, an odd grey color, and one was really really black and shiny. I liked that black one, but no way was I going to pay what he wanted. I set my upper limit at $650, and got mine for $600.

Yes the factory did repair it. They did a nice job, very happy
