I would like to coat my 686 MIM hammer and trigger for appearance purposes. Can these be chromed and still fit/function? If not, other possible finish(es)?

Any refinisher such as Ford's should be able to matte hard chrome these for you. Generally, adding hard chrome does not change a part to any significant degree and reinstalling the pieces should not present any fitting issues.

Hard chrome is a specialized industrial finish offered by a small group of commercial platers, minimum charge at most platers is approx. $75.00. So while hard chrome plating of your parts is possible, it would be costly. I am not aware of any gun refinishing firm that has capability to hard chrome plate. You might want to consider satin nickel plating.

Yep. Hard chrome is a pretty common aftermarket firearms finish and has been around for at least 30 years.

Finish

You might try Magnaport Arms. I had a 57 done years ago. Had the works done. Action job, hard chroming, and porting. My fav S&W right now. I ran a hard chrome plating area in a tool & die shop a long time ago and the finish is great. It is only as good as the metal under it. If you want to go a step above I would suggest TIN. Titanium Nitride. Harder, slicker, but with a gold finish. I know a guy whom had a 1911 TIN finished. Truly a man with a Golden gun. Not a James Bond sequel either. There is another finish in the tool & die field. It is called black diamond. Harder than the hubs of hell and way slicker than anything mentioned above. Hope this helps
