I am looking for recommendations to replace the stock handguard on my S&W 15 to one with picattiny rails.

You are going to get a million answers on this one. To narrow the recommendations down a bit. Are you looking for a quad rail or something else?

And are you looking for something as simple as drop in replacements, or are you wanting to free float the barrel? What do you intend to use the rail for?

I want to replace the handguard on my rifle because (Provide a detailed objective). And my budget is ($$).

If you are not looking to free float, you could get a Magpul hand guard. I believe you can mount rails on it. I think that is as inexpensive as you can go.

Rail

I have an M&P 15T. The quad rail that comes on the 15T S&W is a UTG. Works great and is affordable.

I may add a flashlight, I am more interested in a free float barrel more than anything else and what is needed to accomplish this.

I like the looks of the Troy rail. What addition parts are needed to complete the install?

I am assuming that the M&P 15 model that you have has a fixed front sight base, or you have the OR model with the railed front sight base. If you are only going to attach a flashlight, I would go with a drop in rail (non free float), or Magpul handguard and call it a day... much cheaper and easier solution.

However, if you really want to go free float, there are a couple of options...

1. A drop in free float rail that utilizes your fixed front sight post. Troy makes a few of these, the Charlie, Delta, or MRF. The Charlie and Delta utilize the delta ring on your rifle, nothing to remove. The Charlie is a quad rail, where the Delta looks similar to the rail pictured above. The MRF requires you to remove the delta ring and locks up directly on the barrel nut.

2. A one piece unit that requires removal of the front sight base and replacement with a low profile gas block. Some of these will use the standard barrel nut, and others have proprietary mounts that will be included with the rail kit.

My model 15 has a railed front sight base.

Ok, then disregard the models with the cut outs for a standard front sight base... you are most likely looking at option 2, replacing your railed gas block with a low profile gas block and then using a one piece free float tube.
