Imagine bumping into Hank in the hall on the way to the john. Almost as bad as meeting the wife..

In the mid '70s we were camped at Crater Lake National Park. The water at that time was not good. We got what came to be named the Crater Lake Crud. Necessitated many trips to the outhouse. One night, my dad felt a need. A need that had to be taken care of in the most expeditious manner. So, without grabbing a flashlight, off he went down the trail to the outhouse. Halfway there, he trips over something in the trail and goes sprawling. You guessed it, it was a black bear lying in the trail. Dad said he never stopped moving towards the Site of Relief, just slower and backwards. In the dark. The bear just stood up on all fours and walked off. Dad came back to the tent and us kids got to sleep in the trailer instead of the tent. We also stopped drinking that water.

Had to shoot a bear in the butt last year. Used a 12 gauge with rubber buckshot. Range about 20 yards. Was still kicking up dust 200 yards away as he ran. My 8 year old grandson said it wasn't buckshot but instead he calls it buttshot.

My uncle shot a dog with rat shot one time. He said the dog would call to see if he was home before coming back through again.

500 pounds??!!! That is huge for a black bear!! My grandson shot this black bear last spring and it weighed somewhere between 350 and 400 pounds. I can't even imagine shooting a 500 pound black bear.

Hank and pals to get no bail release:
The state Department of Fish and Wildlife on Thursday said it will soon begin trapping bears in the South Lake Tahoe area to tag the animals and collect evidence for genetic analysis. The bears will be released in a "suitable habitat" and the agency said no trapped animals will be euthanized as part of the project.
