I got to go to the range and play!!! I haven't been to an outdoor range in at least the last four years. Camden county has just built a really classy nice extremely well laid out range for both pistols and rifles. My cow!!! The rifle range goes from 50 - 100 all the way to 200 yds.!!! WoooHooo!!! And they will permit me to fire my beloved military rifles from the prone position! My oh my!!! Prone at 200 yds. I am all a twitter with anticipation! Best part is I don't have to paste up paper targets. They've got this electronic setup like the NRA has up at the shooting center. That is going to be a real improvement to me. It means no one has to sit and wait till there is a cease fire so everyone can go paste/change targets, etc. It means I'll be able to practice at 200 yds. w/o someone plunking a round into my target b/c they were not paying attention. Happy! Happy!

Now, on to the pistol range. Paper targets are allowed. No electronic targets as on the rifle range. But ... it has these weird little steel things that flip back and forth when you shot them! Heard about such things. Saw pictures. Never actually had a chance to shoot at such a range. Well, all that changed today! Me and my trusty Ruger Standard Automatic and my Sig 226 Legion paid a visit to the range. I had one small box of Federal Automatch ammo for the Ruger ... and a little 100 rd. Federal value pak for the Sig. I happily fired just about all the .22LR ammo at the flapper plate things. Really fun to have them flip back and forth. Makes me wish there were a 100 rd. magazine for the RSA!!!

The Sig is amazing. I bought it back in 2016. Probably paid to much, but my wife told me it was time to stop trying to get a really good pistol that I could enjoy rather than making excuses for when it gave trouble. That Sig has had a little over 3K rounds through it. No problems of any kind at all. POA = POI using any kind of decent ammo. I've fired questionable reloads produced by companies I've never before heard of as well as steel cased, aluminum cased and brass cased ammo both domestic and imported. That Sig has fired all of it ... including stuff with hard primers ... with complete perfection! I'm shocked. Shocked I say! Once thought only Glock could have delusions of perfection!

Very happily while shooting and having a good time I noticed a fellow who was not having such a good time. He was having some problems getting his pistol to hit where he had it pointed, etc. Nice pistol ... CZ 75 compact. I had plenty of ammo so I stepped down the line and asked if he'd like to try things with my RSA. Not surprisingly, he immediately was gratified by getting good hits. He said it was the first time he'd ever fired a pistol. He had no training, etc. I enjoyed watching him get good results with the Ruger. His mood and attitude improved immediately. I suspect his next purchase will be a good quality .22 LR pistol. That little CZ is a pretty thing, but especially for a brand new shooter, it was probably a handful.

What a wonderful day! The Christmas gift from the church was enough to pay for a one year membership to the range. There is no limit on visits. There are no additional fees, etc. It is only 20 miles from my house .... and from the office it is only 12 miles!!! I figure I can scoot out there on my lunch break ... enjoy maybe 30 minutes of range time and be back in the office by 1 PM!!! Praise the Lord! Sincerely. bruce.

Congratulations!

Sounds like a genuinely great place, especially county owned. None of the ranges I belong to allow steel (any metal) targets now.

I'm envious. I still haven't found a decent outdoor range.

I thought I had found one, but after I joined I discovered they had some complaints and false accusations about rounds getting out. The pistol range is now a maximum of 10 yds, the firing line is a shipping container with one side removed. It's as noisy as shooting inside.

The rifle range is 100 yds, shooting inside another cargo container, bench only, and through a concrete tube.

I finally joined an indoor range, at least it is 25 yds. But they let people shoot rifle and shotgun there too. The noise is just incredible. Especially when they put you next to some guy blasting away with his AR15.

plugs + muffs are absolutely mandatory if you place any value on your hearing.

Having a nice gun club or range near by is one of life's little pleasures. 😎
My gun club is 9 miles away and gets used weekly. It would be hard to not have a place to shoot when you want too.

Re: New Shooter. I remember the first pistol I ever bought and fired ... little neat little horsey gun ... Colt Commander in (of course) .45 ACP. I'd never held a pistol other than a little .32 revolver that my father owned. First time I fired that Colt I thought the little horse on the side of the slide had kicked me! Could not hit the broad side of a barn with it. Never was very good with it. Later, got myself a four inch S&W 19-2. Of course I loaded it up with some nice Federal loudnboomer .357 S&W Magnum ammo. Man of man that thing was loud. Tried to shoot it with one finger in my left ear. Finally got some filters off used cigarettes. Helped a little bit. That was back in 1979. Later a policeman offered to take me to a range in New Orleans. There I learned the wonders of ear muffs ... plugs ... and .38 Midrange Wad Cutters. Oh the joy of being young and dumb! I looked at that fellow with that new gun. He was hitting to the left. He took a hammer and started to "adjust" the rear sight. Happily I got his attention before he could launch a whack attack on the rear sight. Not surprisingly, the CZ was properly zeroed for windage ... and elevation was about right. He was shooting some Winchester 9mm in a brown craft paper type box with all sorts of NATO looking markings on it. I think it may have been a little warmer than my El Cheepo Deluxe 9mm ball. His had nifty brass cases. Must have been approved for use by ministers as the cases all had a nice cross in a circle. Personally, I liked my aluminum cases better. Slapped the little spinner things like a girl letting a boy know how to understand the word "NO!" I do hope he will invest in some ear muffs. Those foam plug things didn't look all that helpful. Sincerely. bruce.
