HARD CHROME PICS added Please tell me what ya'll think

The 625 already came with a frosted bead blasted finish, so it looked different from your standard stainless gun.

My -2 is fully roll marked, while the -5's markings were only lasered on. The laser engraving of that time was shallow and would wear right off with use.

I'd bet a nickel it's just your standard bead blasted finish. Perhaps someone tried to do a little fluff and buff on it.

Froggie, the reason the slides were left blue is because on sunny days, the reflection and glare off of the bright metal would make the sights difficult to distinguish clearly.

John
Exactly! The hard chrome protected the receiver's grip area from sweaty hands, the blued slide reduced glare and light reflection along the sight plane.

I think that is a slick looking gun. You did well!
99% sure it's hard chrome. You can see the difference on the cylinder's charge holes. It's a good looking job.

Excuse the down and dirty phone pic. I had this built in the mid 90's and bead blasted then hard chromed. In and out of my holster probably over a thousand times and it looks as good as new.

The color in the photo is a little red but the actual color is very neutral.

My only hard chrome gun a 19-2. Bought used. Was allegedly a duty gun from a neighboring town. Barrel markings still there but the S&W logo completely missing from side plate for some reason. I swapped out the front sight with a factory replacement. Changed the rear sight blade to black. Shown below another rescue a model 67 no dash which was bead blasted. Changed rear sight blade on that one also.

thanks Jason, i'll try to not spend it all in 1 place. i thought it was well done but it may be the first one i ever saw other than a picture.

we have a local classified internet site and do a little trading on there from time to time. i traded a colt 1911 that i took in trade for it. i had about $800 in the colt that the previous owner had cericoated.

thanks for the replies. krs/ kenny r s

i came across a 625 revolver that was said to be hard chromed. the marking on the barrel would be smith and wesson on one side of the barrel and 45 ACP on the other. gun looks great but the lettering on the barrel is very faint on one side and not visible on the other. the wrighting in these models is not roll marked or pressed but etched on. any experiance with hard chrome finishes and is this loss of etching normal to the hard chroming process thanks. krs/kenneth r smith

Looking at the photos. Great revolver! The box end tells a lot.

"Modified for IDPA" says a lot. The previous owner wanted to be competitive. Aside from the mentioned modifications, I would bet there was an action job done.

"…Cut to 4"…". Tells us it probably started as a 5" barrel.

"Hard chromed". Which was done for competition. Why would they lie?

"Now 45 ACP". This tells me it started as a 45 long Colt and was machined to accept full moon clips. The chambers are numbered and appear chamfered. Chamfering is a good idea. Not sure about numbering.

Does a long Colt round fit?

Kevin, the revolver has a really nice double and single action. i bought it from a young fellow who says he bought at a gun show recently. i don't know if a long colt will chamber correctly as i have not tried but i will. i have no experience with a gun that the cylinder has been machined like that. if the long colt will fit will it be safe to shoot 45 LC in it.

what exactly should i be looking for when i try it other than cylinder length and if the extractor works on them. i have a 625-2 45 ACP and am of the understanding i can shoot 45 auto rim in it and not have to use the moon clips though i have not tried it. i did pic up a box or 2 auto rim before most recent ammo crunch. thanks , kenny

There are gunsmiths who cut long Colt cylinders to accept the moonclipped ACP round. They machine the after end of the cylinder down in length to do so. If that is what happened, the mount of the 45 long Colt should still hit the ledge in the chamber and headspace. Another possibility is the gunsmith, or owner, switched the long Colt cylinder for an ACP one. Either way your revolver should accept moonclipped rounds or AR rounds. Drop an ACP round into a chamber and see how deep it drops. That should tell you what you are dealing with.

Properly converted cylinders are perfectly safe with 45 ACP/AR & 45 long Colt. You might have to adjust your sights between the two.

Keep us posted.

hey Kevin, 45 long colt is a no go. thanks, kenny

No go? As the cartridge goes in but rests on the cylinder and when the cylinder closes there is excessive headspace. Or the cartridge goes in, the rim is proud of the ejector but the cylinder won't close?

Trying to figure out the box marking, "now 45 ACP".

Kevin

i didn't take any measurements but the long colt round bottomed out with at least 1/3 of the case still exposed. could never even think about closing cylinder. with the things I've learned in this post from the generous and patient members, the change would have to have involved changing the cylinder. again thank you all so much.

makes me think if i could find and have fitted a 45 long colt cylinder i should be able to fire long colt ammo in the gun. please advise (school) me right or wrong. ya'll are awesome. i'm not worthy, thanks again, kenny :o:):D
