I have a Smith and Wesson stamped model 36-1 38 special nickel 3" bbl adjustable factory target sights wide target trigger can somebody please help me on this
It may be one of a special run of Chiefs Special Targets. Some were pre-model stamped guns, some MOD 50 (mostly 2") and some MOD 36 and -1. Photos and at least a partial serial number (like 1J234xx) would be helpful for a definite ID. One was posted here recently that was probably assembled outside the factory.
The Model 50 was nothing more than a Chief's Special Target. Manufactured in several small lots from 1955-1975 they appear to have been numbered as either Model 36 or Model 50 somewhat indiscriminately. If your gun is marked Model 36 then it is a 36. What is the reason for the question about the Model 50????
There were only 213 CSTs made in the 36-1, that's a 3" heavy barrel with target sights! These were produced in 1975 with serial numbers between 2J3134-2J3347. The CST(mod 36) became the model 50 in 1973 and continued until 1977 with 1132 being made. When buying these guns be very careful as there were many fakes made by installing the J frame rear target sight.

As can be seen from the photos above, a fake would require both the installation of a target sight and a new barrel with the special high sight that goes with the adjustable rear. I have one of the original batch that is a little rough, but it was affordable.
