Has anyone been able to remove the thread protector from the M&P Compact .22?

I'm very disappointed in S&W customer service!!!!!
After getting very good service from them with my Shield, I didn't hesitate to buy the compact 22 (suppressor ready) even though I have no use for the suppressor attachment, as I have no intention of using a suppressor. IT is just that, that is all that was available at the time.
On Monday, May 5 ,I tooke delivery of one.
My first step ,as always was to field strip and clean before heading to the range but I could not get the attachment off. The instructions said turn counter clockwise, but do not indicate if that is looking from the front ore the rear of the gun, so I contacted CS and they said looking from the rear. When I could not budge the thing, I called again and was told the second time ,"from the REAR", and with that I broke the wrench!!!!!
CS said they would put a new wrench in an envelope and get it out to me. That was Monday, and here it is Saturday and still no wrench. Looks like, if I am going to shoot my new gun, it will have to be without cleaning.:(:mad::(

It's a standard right-hand thread. To take it off, you turn it counterclockwise looking into the muzzle. Prove this to yourself be taking off the thread protector first.

BTW, Bud, if you have not interest in a suppressor, you can always call S&W and purchase a standard barrel cap, the one they put on the non-suppressor ready Compacts. That way you don't have to remove the adapter each time you want to remove the slide. Could save a lot of hassle going forward.

Maybe I'm missing something but, I'm a little confused here. Why do you need to remove the barrel nut to clean your pistol?

Where is the old customer service?

I just received my M&P 22 compact suppressor-ready model.
The instructions say remove the thread adaptor prior to field stripping and the gun came with a tool included.
It also says to rotate the adapter counter clockwise.
NOW - - - - I tried as hard as I could and it wouldn't move. I went as hard as I thought but did not want to damage the gun.
NO Luck.
Called customer service and they said try harder.,
I BROKe the jaw of the tool and the adapter is still on.
Called CS again and they said they would send me a new wrench!:(:(

That was a week ago last Monday and NO WRENCH!

He has a suppressor-ready Compact, which has a suppressor adapter on the end, rather than a barrel nut. You must remove the suppressor adapter to get the slide off the gun.

The barrel nut doesn't require that, which is why I recommended he switch to a barrel nut since he doesn't plan on using a suppressor.

You could have had the EKW wrench by now. After I broke the OEM wrench tightening the adapter, I bought the better wrench. I bet you will too.

This is great advice. I will never use a suppressor, but I think a) the gun looks good with the adapter, and b) I get another 1/2" of barrel length. :D

Carver a maker of Comps says to Red Loctite their Comp on as you don't need to remove the barrel from the slide to clean the gun. I agree I am tired of taking the nut off mine. Don

I don't understand. How would attaching a comp onto a fixed-barrel gun like the M&P22 Compact make it easier (or even possible) to get the slide off?

I just picked mine up. Took it to the range once and put 150 rounds through it all suppressed. I understand lefty loosy righty tighy. Only thing I used was left hand on the gun and right hand on the wrench. Granted it took a good bit of force before the wrench snapped but now what am I to do. If I can’t remove the thread adapter I can't disassemble this pistol to clean. I really like the gun but the thread adapter and wrench are a definite disappointment. Why doesn’t S&W provide the EKW adapter? I am just going to order that and use a real wrench to remove the S&W piece of junk adapter, throw it in the trash and move on. 22 bucks from EKW is a way better deal than waiting around for another junky wrench from Smith that I could break again with little effort.

What they said was the comp did not have to be removed from the barrel. You can remove the slide and clean it and the barrel with out taking the barrel completely out of the slide. Normally for a cleaning you would remove the comp and take the barrel out of the slide. Sry if I didn't make clear what I was saying. Don

What's clear, I guess, is that you're not talking about the M&P22 Compact. There is no way to remove the slide and barrel and slide together on a fixed barrel gun like the M&P22 Compact. The slide must be removed over the barrel, which is why something like a suppressor adapter, which has a shoulder of larger diameter than the barrel, must be removed, but a barrel cap, which isn't, doesn't.

The comp plan (removing slide and barrel together) would work with a locked breech gun like a "full size," i.e. 9mm, M&P Compact.

Scott sry I missed the fact it was a compact as I have 3 FS M&Ps. I didn't not know the slide and barrel was different. I learn something new every day but then that is why I am on here. Don

Don,

It's not the "compact" part, it's the ".22LR" part. The M&P22's (both full size and compact) have fixed barrels, literally screwed into the frame. To remove the slide, you lift the rear and...well, slide the slide forward, over the barrel and off. If there's anything on the front of the barrel that would prevent the slide from moving forward, it must be removed to take the slide off and field strip the gun. It can be frustrating for the suppressor-ready Compact owners, because someone at S&W it torquing the **** out of the suppressor adapter, so much so that people are breaking the included wrenches.

OMG I am getting old I have really missed the boat on this thread. Sorry everyone I may have to many M&Ps. Don

I'll tell you what is even more frustrating. I just spent $23 on the EWK wrench and it does not fit the suppressor ready model 22C. There is a shoulder on the suppressor adapter that prevent the wrench from slipping over the adapter.

Are you talking about the knurled thread protector on the end of the adapter? That is removable and then the wrench might fit.

I am now considering the EWK for mine as S&W has not sent me a replacement for the wrench I broke. Tomorrow will be 14 days since they told me they were putting a wrench in an envelope and sending it. Even the post office is not usually:eek: that slow!!!

Eric (EWK) made a wrench that will hold up long after the barrel adds a new twist :)
Since I put the standard end cap back on when shooting with folks just new to me, I use it often.
Are you talking about the suppressor adapter that comes on the M&P Compact SUPR READY?
Someone else posted that is doesn't fit because of the shoulder.

Where can one purchase the thread protector at? I have the suppressor ready model but until I get a suppressor I don't want to mess with having to remove the adapter every time I want to clean the pistol.
