Have you ever used an ACOG?

I've been considering the value and viability of using a fixed power magnified optic. Of course the Trijicon ACOG (Advanced Combat Optical Gunsight) is considered the cream of the crop. The question I have is how well would it work for close quarters stuff?

Now, I'm not an "operator" nor do I plan to start a mercenary team. Still, it would be used for shots less than 50 yards. At the close in distances, would the magnification really be a great detriment? Benefit?

If you've used one, how do you like it?

I have a TA31F on my Stagarms and I really do like it. I do have to confess though that I haven't put as many rounds through it as I would like. I have shot it at ranges of 25 to 100 yards and have had pretty good success. Like you I am not an "operator" nor have I shot it in competition.
The Binden Aiming Concept is pretty neat but I think if I was younger I would have better luck with it as I have focusing issues that slow the transition down.
All in all they are a great sight, I do get dime sized groups at 100 yards with mine using Federal XM193 ammo.

I have an ACOG TA01NSN on an M-4 at work. It works well at close range, especially if you shoot with both eyes open. The reticle lights up in the dark and there is a backup iron sight built in on top that also is a night sight. All this with no batteries. The reticle has range finding marks out to 600 meters. That may be a bit much if you only shoot to 50 yards, but it is not a hinderance at close range. I love it.

I also have a 7.5" upper with a Trijicon reflex sight for use in entry situations. It is very handy in the vehicle also. The M-4 is set up safe, semi, 3 round burst.

I do love my ACOG (TA31RMR-G-CH), what I don't love is the eye relief (1.5in) of the TA31's. Take a hard look at the TA11's with an eye relief of 2.39in, it helps a hell of a lot.

I'm so in love with them that I'm saving for a TA26SG-10 with the plan of putting it on my new AR pistol (Roxie). At over half the price of Roxie.

I almost forgot. I also have a Spikes full auto 22 upper for it also just in case of zombie mice.

In my personal experience an ACOG wouldn't be my first choice at ranges out to 50 yards. An Aimpoint or Eotech (or any quality red dot) might be a better option. If you plan to shoot 100yrds+ consistently then you can't beat the ACOG.

I have a ACOG TA33F with a "red dot" on top. Talk about a dream set up. Don't even have to shift your head to switch between the two. Not cheap but seriously gets the job done for 50 yards in. Really the best of both worlds.

I use one on my Lewis 308. It really works well outside of 20 yards or so. When you get closer it works, it just takes more concentration to shoot what you're trying to hit. The 3x magnification makes it a little weird with both eyes open, when your'e up close.
