Have you seen a barrel do this?

I went shooting with my Sport this weekend and after running about 240 rounds through it, I noticed the barrel looked weird. It looks like you can see the the rifling of the barrel on the outside of the barrel. Is this because I didn't get the barrel wiped down good before shooting it or what?

Don't know for sure, but I don't think that's the rifling. Did you lay it or lean it on something when it was hot (after 240 rounds, it was HOT) that could have left that pattern ?

Will they clean off....

Will they clean off easily? I'd expect that they would. Did you get your barrel extra hot or anything like that??? Even if it didn't get TOO hot, I'd think that the varying heat loss out of the barrel could 'bake' a pattern into the oil or whatever might be on it and the rifling (thickness of the barrel at certain points) could be a factor.

Probably went away after you put some lube on it, right? I think the heat just burned all your lube off. The grooves and lands heated up at a different rate, and left that pattern.

I should have stated that I didn't shoot all 240 rounds in a row, it was over several hours. I did shoot two 30 round mags almost one right after the other and my friend commented that the barrel was probably a little warm then. I went to touch the barrel and that's when I noticed the pattern.

I did a quick wipe down last night after I got home and it looked like it wiped off. Checked it just now and it that wiping it down did remove it for now. I'm just curious about the cause of it and will have to wait until next time I shoot again to see if happens then too.

That's the pattern of hammer forging on the exterior of the barrel. Take a look at an uncoated stainless hammer forged barrel. The pattern is the same.

Barrels get hot.

Anything on their surface leaves discoloration.

A wipe down "fixes" it.

Ever seen a "skin print" on a machine gun barrel? Most won't make that mistake twice.

If you don't want it looking weird keeping it in the safe helps. Some folks claim that's best way to keep society safe.
