Not about any drama...mostly about technology.

I consider Lee and many of the folks that make this place run good friends. Unfortunately, here in Rural Maine...I'm not able to keep up with the connectivity. My fastest link throught the local phone company is about 26K. And with all the modern Patches that it takes to keep a forum up and running....I'm personally running out of options to keep up.

The funny thing is that at work I run Windows 7 on ultra speed....but that is only a few days at a time each week. So when I get home and try to keep up...I'm mostly locked out of viewing what's being posted. It is very frustrating.

Life is too short ~ to settle on somebody else's dust. I sometimes log in 5 or 6 times to get updated on threads that I'm participating in .....only to get that GodAwful warning that "Windows is unable to Connect" message.

So, until things change in my little window of the world...I guess that it's time to roll in the sidewalk. I'm not steppin' out on you guys. I'm just unable to keep up with the rest of the worlds connectivity....

Dang, hang tough. I waited a decade for DSL & I understand all too well that the internet & websires cater to higher speed connections.

It's a struggle w/huge pics, video, flash ads, animation and such for dial-up...

Get something like I have. Starband communications.

When I moved to this up scale community about 10 miles from a large town, the only speed I could get was dial up at 14Kps. A friend sold me a starband system and it runs about the same monthly rate as DSL from the phone company.

All I need to have it work is a computer and electricity. No phones, no cable needed. It is straight to the my dish and into the computer.

As always, two weeks after I bought the system, the phone company sent me a letter saying I was eligible for DSL. I kept Starband since I can take it with me on the road, camping or to my farm way away from any phone line or utilities.

Giz, try a satellite setup. I am limited to one at my work site. Not sure what is available in your neck of the woods, but I use WildBlue.

The frustration level is very high on my end. The cable guys take a turn with their system at the end of my road, up a main thoroughfare. Not enough business on my street....I guess.

I'd like to participate full-time and not on the hit or miss basis that I'm currently on.

Have you considered a satellite based internet system? There are two that I am aware of. Wildblue and Hughesnet. I had Wildblue for a couple of years before DSL came around. It's not the greatest, but you get decent download speeds and it beats dialup. Just a thought.

Don't know how far from your local substation you are but in my case I was told that three miles was too far to get high speed service.
I asked several times and was told "no way".

My neighbor just happens to attend Church with the high speed installer tech.
Long story short...he hooked me up with the medium speed connection.

Just a thought.

Your phone service doesn't offer Direct Subscriber Line?

I literally have a little rinky dink phone company who answers the phone as "The Phone Company" when you call them, and they offer DSL in consumer and business tiers from 768 up to 2 Megabit in Synchronous and Asynchronous and it's affordable.

While I hate to see you go, I also envy you. Whenever we see one of those commercials with the little red and blue maps showing the areas that don't have cell phone service, I point to them and tell the wife we need to move there.

I am posting with Wild Blue right now. I live in the middle of nowhere by the big ditch in Arizona, satellite is the only high speed option available. Sometimes the weather interferes with the speed, but overall it is reliable and fast enough to get what I need done.

And I thought I had it bad with 37.2 kbps dial up! I'm in a similar boat.. they can't / wont run cable through the woods to my place and last I checked the hill behind my house is too high for satellite.. but at least I can get a connection and hold it for a few hours.

I sure hope you find a solution!

Hang in there Giz. I hear where you are coming from.

Years ago back at the ranch, every phone call we made even 30 miles to town was a long distance call.

The day after we got connected to be able to make local calls, we went on the net.
Our connection was so slow that some times took all night to down load a program or something with a picture attached.

Obviously I didn't spend much time on the net.

Moved to town and joined the big time stuff.

Hope you can work something out to come visit. I always enjoy your posts and particularly the pictures of your soot burners.

Can't get a cell signal, but I have DSL. Everywhere but Rodeo and Antelope Wells , NM and Portal Paradise and Apache AZ is long distance.

It will work out eventually. What happens on this site is the accelerator program I use gets into some kind of conflict and shut's down. Leaving me with a 36K connection. If there are pics in thread it takes forever to load them. Very frustrating. It's the only site that this happens on. The other thing that happens here is my computer locks up. Guess it's time to get a new one and run Windows 7... I'm still on XP!...LOL!
