Things being the way they are in California my wife and I decided to buy a new pair of M&P (9 and 40). SSE, single shot exemption for you free "staters", may well be done at the end of 2014 making it impossible to get any full size M&P into the state. I've bought mag blockers which the FFL will install and will be removing the mag disconnect from our current 9 & 40 to match the new acquisitions. My only concern is that my wife wants the second 40 in her name which, technically, means it's not my backup;)

I've put about 1000 rounds through my 40 without a hiccup and the trigger has continued to improve. It will be very interesting to take both 40's to the range and do a side-by-side.

FWIW, if we didn't have 2 grandsons (plus son and DiL) 25 miles away we would be out of CA in a heartbeat.

I love the compact I just bought and would love to have a FS. I, too, am interested in seeing a side by side comparison of a broken in 40 vs. a new one. Sorry to hear you are in CA...hopefully things will turn around :/

I don't speak Californian, but I'm always looking to learn, so can you explain to a redneck what a single shot exemption and a mag blocker are? Happy for the two S&W's with a new home, by the way.

Mag Blocker - Any new magazine purchased in California or shipped in from out of state can hold no more than 10 rounds. Legacy magazines in state with greater capacity are ok, but they cannot be sold/transferred to another individual. The blockers are used to convert a large capacity mag to 10 rounds; I've purchased blockers which the FFL will install so I can take possession of the mags after the 10 day waiting period. California-specific guns which are listed on a shrinking DOJ roster are sold with 10 round mags.

SSE - This is a "loophole" in the law which the legislature will probably close at the end of the year. An FFL can receive an off-roster handgun and if he has the right kit he adds a long barrel and stakes in a dummy mag or otherwise to limit the handgun to single shot. Once the purchaser officially receives the handgun the FFL can reverse the procedure.

Basically, California is on a path to eliminate the sale of autoloading handguns.

What's this? You have a waiting period for magazines in CA?
....

No, I could probably pick up the magazines sooner, but I need to give the FFL time to install the blockers. I could do it myself, but that would involve illegal possession of a magazines with greater than 10 round capacity. In any event I have plenty of 9mm and 40 cal M&P mags for our current handguns so I'll just pick up the modified mags when we pick up the single-shot handguns:(

Glad your getting the M&P's, 10 rds is better than no rounds. Keep your parts or have FFL store them in case you would move or want to sell to a free state. Be Safe,

I'm glad I live in Texas! Just took my M&P 40C out to shoot for the first time this morning. Loved it! And I hear it will just get better the more rounds I put through it. My BIL has a full size M&P 40 with a 15 rd magazine with a grip extension that works with the compact. Great feel! I think I will get the 15round mag for the house and the regular for carry. Looking to get my CCL this year. California is just nuts-- I feel sorry for you guys.

I unfortunately have to visit the People's Republik of Kalifornia a couple of times a year due to family committments. Believe me for those of you in Red States that haven't been there. IT'S LIKE ENTERING A FOREIGN COUNTRY. I have to give up my Constitional Right to defend myself when I cross over into this State that won't honor my concealed carry permit.
As an aside: You also give up this right should you be stupid enough to go to Mexico anymore.

I would consider moving.....
As a native Southlander; I defer all decisions about moving until mid-winter, after tornado & hurricane season, or until there is a 7.5 earthquake when the news media's top stories change... or until after CA's dove hunting season closes

Having spent 3 years of my life in California, I can say it is without question one of the most beautiful states I've been to...the politics, on the other hand, are the stuff that overflowing septic tanks are filled with...

It was my intention to make a pithy remark, not hijack the thread. More of a hysterical political cesspool all about inanimate objects.

I feel bad for you! It just sounds completely absurd! I live in PA but less than 1/4 from NJ. What a freaking huge difference 1/4 mile makes!!! Hollow points=felony and many asinine laws! California seems to be worse going by what you say!
