Homeland Security sets Real ID travel deadline for 2018

TSA's airport signs target residents of the nine states whose identification doesn’t yet comply with the federal requirements.

The states where residents will need identification other than driver’s licenses to fly on Jan. 22, 2018, are: Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Washington.

But some critics have been reluctant to participate, out of privacy concerns and fears that it could lead to a national identity card. The federal standards require anti-counterfeit technology in the cards, and require states to verify an applicant’s identity and conduct background checks on workers who issue the licenses.

I have the Passport App on my Android phone.

The Mobile Passport app speeds you through U.S. Customs and Border Protection at 1 cruise port and 20 airports. Just fill out your profile and answer CBP’s questions – then go straight to the “Mobile Passport Control” express lane at the airport!

Everyone should have a passport. It trumps all ......

Yup, that's why I posted this heads up thread. Give the forum readers 11 months to get their passport or reapply if it's not up-to-date.
It takes a fair bit of time to complete the process, so don't procrastinate, or you might be forced to pay the high fee for expedited processing.

As for me, since the Feds have my fingerprints, multiple times, have issued me a passport throughout my life, and the IRS knows everything there is to know about my financial situation, a national ID or privacy concerns regarding driver's licenses, which I have held in four states since I turned 16 — my point being, who I am is not in doubt with anyone — is not high on my list of concerns.

For folks who don't travel by air, I can see why it doesn't matter. (Unless you are in favor of trying to be really sure of the identity of domestic air travelers because the possibility of domestic airliner terrorism worries you.)

For those that do travel by air, an alternative to a passport might be the wallet-sized passport card. This is designed for entry into the US by land from Canada or Mexico, or sea from the Caribbean. Not sure how TSA feels about them.

Hmm. Anybody use their state CHL or CCW permit for air travel?

I don't fly, have no desire to go anywhere I would have to. I have spent my whole life in a few states down here in the Mid South and South East and don't feel I have missed anything. Happy as I can be, and if God had meant me to fly somewhere, He'd have given me wings. Happy old man.

In Washington State, drivers can apply for an "Enhanced Drivers License" that meets Homeland Security and TSA requirements.
My wife and I got ours last month. The only traveling we do is to Hawaii every couple of years so we really don't need passports.
We carry our DL's (as well as our CC's) in a sleeve now to foil the bad guys with scanners.

Everyone should have a passport. It trumps all other form of ID and is accepted by every government agency.

I agree with this but mainly because a driver's license is exactly that, a license to drive a vehicle on public roads. It shouldn't be used as a "federal ID", it's just a driver's license.
I used to work for PennDot as a driver license examiner (hated that job). The reason PA DL is not excepted is because they are behind the times as far as anti-counterfit measures on their licenses, basically no holograms on the license. Their employees are background checked and they use the same means of ID to obtain a license as every other state (SS card, birth certificate and out of state license, all verified through a federal database that compares name, birthdate and SSN).
I also have issues using SSN for ID purposes. It's for collecting social security, not for ID. Sorry, just a pet peeve.

Arizona should also be on the list. I don't fly anymore, too much hassle, plus I have a valid Passport. Interesting that my Private Pilot license, my CCW from two different States, and my word aren't good enough for the Country I took an Oath to protect. Everyone is now a 'Suspect" and not to be trusted....a sad commentary on living in today's World.

I lived in New Mexico for a lot of years. You might be surprised how many times I've ordered stuff and been told that the vendor does not ship outside the USA. I haven't flown much in my life outside of the travels I took at the behest of Uncle Sam. These days, I don't have any reason to travel much beyond my state of residence and a few states that border it. Since I moved to Texas, I can travel a huge lot of miles and still have new places to go if I wish without crossing any State lines. Elderly parents still live in NM so cross that line pretty regularly, but I know the back roads where there are no border guards to check on who is crossing back and forth!!! I know the value of a passport, but I just can't see that I have any need at all for one. Crossed into Mexico several times in my younger days, especially while stationed at Ft. Bliss, but I have lost nothing in Mexico and have no plans whatsoever to cross the river again. I'm surprised NM is not on that list mentioned by the OP. It was until pretty recently, simply because you did not have to be a citizen of the USA to get a driver's license there! I think you can still get one now, but it states that you are or are not a legal citizen, so it's accepted at the airports now. At least I think that's right? As far as I'm concerned, if my Texas Driver's License and LTC is not accepted without any other bonafides, then I ain't got no business there anyway!!!

I just renewed my drivers license in IL, and it has multiple area's of anti-counterfeiting. The new process was after they took the picture they issued me a Paper temp license and the new one was mailed to me about 2 weeks later. What they did during that couple weeks I don't know, but anything that makes it easier to travel I like. I had recently renewed my passport, (which only took 2 weeks) and it also has a chip in it.

Lee,

AZ now issues what they refer to as the "real i.d.". The last time I purchased a pistol at Cabelas and found out that the old AZ drivers license would not work and had to bring in my vehicle reg for proof of residency, went to mv dept and paid I think it was $25 and they issued me the new AZ drivers license, which has a star and USA in the upper right corner indicating it is good to go as federal i.d.

But the best way to go for those that fly occasionally is TSA PreCheck.

My only trip this year out of S.C. will be to the SWCA meeting in Charlotte. I know when I get there I can go in any bathroom I see but will I need a Passport?

Billy, not when you get to my place. You and every other male will use the one with the lid up;). Oh Hell, never mind, just use the first one ya can find.
