Just a heads up, Midsouth has a good selection of powder available right now. May be a good time to pick up a little bit this weekend. Just ordered some myself.

Maybe some of you are not blessed with an abundance of local gun shops as we in south-central Pennsylvania are but the number of these "found some powder" threads with mail-order sources cited never ceases to amaze me. It seems that many shooters overlook their local shops and prefer to shop at the "big box" sporting goods stores where so many others do, which results in lightly stocked shelves. Around here, small shops had and still have the inventory at competitive prices.

Back when we were experiencing something of a shortage of some components, I read a thread in which a nearby poster wrote that he was on a waiting list with 1,200 other customers for certain powders. Why would you shop where so many others do when a better alternative is available? And at that same time, three shops I frequent that are also close by for that shooter had that powder on hand.

At that same time, I never was unable to find anything I wanted aside from 22LR ammo and since I maintain a good inventory of most things, I wasn't hurting for that commodity either. Now again, if there aren't a lot of small shops in your area, I'm sorry for your situation and extend my sympathy but if there are some of those shops in your area, I'm willing to bet you might just find what you want there.

Ed, while I do my best to shop local, the nearest shop that sells reloading supplies is 15 miles up the road. And the same 21$/lb Unique is 30$/lb there. I could drive 45 minutes and pay 27$/lb at another shop. While I love to support local, I work hard for my money. And after buying 3 lbs of powder at the local shop, my hazmat would sort be paid for with an online retailer.

If I was in a pinch, sure I would buy at the local shop. No different then anything else, example: If I had a small project that I needed some Romex for, I go to the local hardware store and buy 100ft, if I needed 2000ft, I go to Lowe's. It's about saving money for me.

Still a shortage of popular powder around here. I buy local when it's available.

Mostly it isn't available and hasn't been available for 3 years.

I guess I'm just spoiled. I have a small one-man shop in the owner's home about a mile away that has just about everything you could need and if he doesn't have it, he will get it. And his prices are very good - most powders are between $24 and $28 per pound - and that includes the 6% state sales tax. He charges $25 for gun transfers and does them without complaining that you didn't buy the gun from him. If you did buy it from him, transfers are $5.

That's just one of two or three shops like that within five miles of my home. One has been in business on a part-time basis - two hours each evening and Saturday mornings - for 47 years and deals with 17 distributors all over the country. It's real rare for him to tell me he couldn't get something I wanted.

But then, this is Pennsylvania where there are just shy of a million licensed resident hunters, more tournament trapshooters than any other state, the third-largest trapshooting facility in the world and the largest state championship trap shoot. We're also home to the Original Pennsylvania 1,000-yard Benchrest Club and many other major facilities.

Of course, our performance in presidential elections would make you wonder but since political discussions are prohibited, I won't go into that.
