Heatwave coming. My preparations

Good planing but unless your garage is is under Air, I do not agree with #4

The issue is that the air handler/furnace is in a niche in the garage. While the air circulating through it is not getting heat from the garage directly, that heat is all around it as the metal trunking and the air handler structure absorb heat form the surrounding air.

I found out some years ago that if I came home from work about 430pm and put my car in the garage, it had a noticeable effect on keeping the house cool. It let in the ambient air from outside AND inserted a 3500 lb chunk of heated metal, some parts of which are at 2-300°F or more. When I started leaving my car outside until later, I immediately noticed that the A/C ran less.

102° here today and expected for several days. I'm prepared too :D.

My air handler is in the attic above the garage! They all are down here. For a while some builders hung them down from the ceiling of the garage for "easy access" (looks bad)

It is at least a gazillion (I checked:)) degrees in the attic.

I just hate to see the Sun destroy my cars.

What did people do 100or 150 years ago?

The smart ones didn't live in Las Vegas. They summered in Colorado, up in the mountains, like at 10,000 ft and above. In the mornings its sometimes in the 30s, usually in the 40s. Its a good start to the day. Then the sun comes up above the eastern mountains about 10:00 and stays up there until it drops behind the ones to the west, at maybe 4:00 or so. Daily high way up around 75. Take a walk in the evening and use a jacket. What's not to like?

probably what my wife and I do. We don't have any a/c and when the temperatures get into the triple digits outside, it's just as hot inside. We'll open the attic windows and door and get some airflow that way. We also turn on fans and open the windows.
On the really hot, humid days we get the innertubes and spend the day floating and drinking beer on the river and we'll use the grill in the backyard to cook dinner instead of the stove.
I personally prefer the triple digit days, my neuropathy is temperature sensitive and I can move better on hot days.

Looks like we busted 100 today in Austin....even hotter for tomorrow. Thank God it's a dry heat. :)

Gonna be a long hot summer I suspect. Might have to add some styrofoam insulation to the beer fridge. A man's gotta know his limitations and his priorities.

beating your heat

in Fl here. we needed a new roof so went with a highly reflective metal and high rated/tech peel and stick sub layer, reflective window films, put a 2nd oven outside by the pool, moved the dryer to the garage, run dishwasher/ washer drier at night, heavy curtains with the blackout cloth liner in front of triple sliding glass doors facing west. major improvements in comfort and saving app 100$ a month on electric since December. oh and 6 solar panels will heat the pool to 90 degrees easy then I switch it over to heat the Jacuzzi to 103, FOR FREE! sure beats electric or propane. we are now in the pool 3-6 times a day, about 1/2 as much as the dogs. and the new led light bulbs not only give a better quality light but save $ on electric and run cool. it's amazing how much heat incandescent bulbs throw.

Few years back the 3rd week of May I landed at McCarran at 10:30 AM on Sunday morning. It was 113. Went straight to Paris and did not go outside until my plane left Thursday. Cabbie said I just missed it. It was in the 70s the week before.

Good luck / stay hydrated.
