Heirloom Pre-19 S&W Combat Magnum

I also have to admit owning 7 Rugers, 4 wheelguns, an auto and 2 rifles in various calibers, hope I'm not banished from the forum!!!

This isn't like Chevy vs. Ford vs. Mopar is it?

No sir it is not, with your sick sense of humor you will fit right in here.

You got a great revolver and a family keepsake for a great price, I'm glad that you and your aunt were able to come to terms to keep that guy in the family.

Very nice gun. Glad to see it stay in your family.
Great sense of humor as well. :p

It looks alright, but it would look better if you get a can of the spray on chrome from the auto-parts store and make it shiny. Probably fill in some of the sanding marks, too.

Hey, great idea! I'm there! It'll look just like the bumper on a '58 Buick!

If they do, they'll have to kick me out too. I've got about a dozen Rugers, and a half-dozen (looks around) Colts...even a Glock and a...Hi-point. ;)

Beautiful Combat Magnum. The first handgun I ever wanted.

Yah I've got some other stuff too, rifles & shotguns & pistols & such, Winchesters & Marlins & a Colt, even a Springfield Armory plastic 9mm. But only the one Smith.

Pre 19 details

Some interesting details on this one:

* No serial number is visible when cylinder is closed
* SN is stamped on frame under yoke, and bottom of grip frame
* Different number 383xx stamped on yoke, and repeated on grip frame
* Grip is grain matched on the bottom

Cool!

One of these bad boys (in pristine condition with box, tools, papers) just sold on GB for $1,826. Serial 261606.
That one has the SN stamped inside the ejector rod shroud.

I prefer a wire wheel on my one horsepower grinder to remove rust, but that belt sander did the trick:)
Unfortunately, that is my birth year gun, and per forum rules, it must be sent to me immediately....PM me for full shipping information......of course, since you are new here, I will split the shipping costs with you....

As others have mentioned, the case colors are brilliant. Looking at the before and after pictures I'd say you did a great job of cleaning that gun up. The family connection is priceless, not to mention that it is probably a real tack driver. Great job and a great gun. Bless your Aunt!

Smith in the box

I mentioned this has a box, here it is.

I seriously didn't do much to this other than give it a good cleaning, and a little polish on the grips. Looked like it hadn't been cleaned in 20 years. It has been carried some with a bit of muzzle wear, but probably not shot much.

The rust spot might have resulted from contact with the holster thumb break, which hits it right there. I didn't delve in to exact storage conditions, it's a moot point now.

Nice detail

When's the last time you saw a mainstream manufacture bother to grain match the bottom of the grips?

Not lately I bet!

Nice try, sorry!

Slight panick when I read your post...I think I've recovered now after seeing what a tough job you had to work with:D

Looks great and thanks for the Pics

Took the vintage Smith out to the range late this afternoon with my 6" Ruger GP100 for a little back-to-back comparo. I actually like shooting .38 special a bit better than full house 357 with the Smith . It was cloudy and dark, so the Smith did put out some pretty impressive muzzle flash with .357! Nice shooter, I need to work on the sights a bit, shoots about 4" low.

This little 4 inch needs a big brother in the safe...and at the range....
19-3 P&R

Receipt for Combat Magnum

The receipt came today in the mail, "Waltz Sporting Goods, 105 S. Pugh St., State College, PA, June 25, 1958. 1 - 357 S&W Combat Mag, 4" barrel, No. K 317xxx, Pd. In Full"

"Featuring Bear & American Archery Supplies"

(no price given) :p

Looked on Google Maps, photo of address shows older 3-story building with some kind of business.
Waltz Sporting Goods is apparently long gone, but it looks like the building is still there.

Pair of Combat Magnums

Well, I felt a little uneasy about popping off random rounds at the range with a family heirloom, and that Smith looked awful lonely in the gun cabinet with all those Rugers and the Colt, so I bought a companion 19-3, 6-inch barrel Model 19 to keep it company.

:D
