There is a recently released to DVD movie called "Hell or High Water", starring Chris Pine and Jeff Bridges. The movie had a limited showing but has an excellent story that was well acted. It's the story of two brothers who are getting revenge against Midland Texas bank for signing their terminally ill mother to a reverse mortgage loan in order to get her land when she dies.
They decide to rob Midland Texas banks until they have enough to pay off the mortgage before the deadline.

For us gun/shooting/carry enthusiast it is filled with enjoyable lines and scenes.

I highly recommend seeing it. I saw it at the theatre and bought the DVD the first day it came out. :)

P.S. Sorry for misleading by saying Jeff DANIELS was in the movie. It was Jeff BRIDGES. I know the difference, but as I tell my wife when I say something stupid -"It was the medications fault". :) ;)

I remember seeing previews and was underwhelmed. However based upon your assessment, I'll give it a chance when it comes on one of my movie channels. :)

I heard about the film shortly before it was released. It played here in a very short run and I missed it. I soon forgot about it. Now that I know the DVD is out, I'll look for it today. And Jeff Bridges is in it!

I had mixed thoughts about it after seeing it, but am not sorry I sat through it. The actors did a good job. There would be some
spoilers if I talked about the problems I saw with it.

You beat me to it Protected One. We watched that last night. I love to stumble over a movie that doesn't promise much but turns out to be a very excellent movie, It's been a long time since I had such a big surprise and this sleeper. I'd call it a modern day western. Interesting plot that moves right along but the thing that makes this movie one of the most entertaining Ive seen in a long time is the crackling dialogue and Jeff Bridges (Not Jeff Daniels) stellar performance as a grizzled Texas Ranger. It was the performance of his life. Cris Pine and the rest of the cast all turn in top rate jobs. I'll be watching this one another time or two before I send it back to Netflix. I've only ever done that 3 or 4 other times. It is that good.

If you miss this one you'll be missing a good'n.

SPOIL ALERT!!! DON'T READ THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN IT!! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

It's pretty good, but not for a moment did I ever feel sorry for these guys forced to terrorize and murder decent citizens just to save the family farm. Great cinematography with beautiful Texas terain. Great acting. Jeff Bridges (not Daniels) basically being Tommy Lee Jones from "No Country For Old Men" and get's away with it. Improbable ending. Chris Pine would have easily been arrested and convicted of the crimes. His blood DNA all over the bank and getaway car, etc.. But nitpicking aside, a pretty good film.

Started watching it on DVD last week. Got about a third of the way through and was so bored that I turned if off. Just my opinion.

I missed it in the theaters, but I'll watch it when it hits Amazon or Netflix streaming.

Having worked a couple hundred bank robberies I don't have much use for for movies that glorify bank robbers. The bank may have terrible policies, but the terrified 20 year old girl at the teller station with a gun in her face just wants to earn her low pay and get home. I've met a lot of bank robbers, but I've never met a charming one. Except at the movies.

Still, the prospect of seeing Jeff Bridges as a Texas Ranger is more than enough to get me to invest my time.

Have it on my Netflix list. The purpose of a reverse mortgage is to allow the borrower to tap their equity and stay in their home. When they pass on, the loan of course must be paid off. Generally this is done by the house being sold. The kids are a little confused I'd say.

Well, I watched it this evening. I had high hopes. It's worth watching, but overall, I have to say I'm somewhat disappointed in it. I also have to disagree that it's the performance of a lifetime by Jeff Bridges. It doesn't even compare with his turn in True Grit. I think he just basically walks through the whole movie. Nothing he does surprises the viewer. And why he decided to play Ranger Marcus Hamilton as if he has no lower teeth is beyond me. Or maybe he had a lower lip full of snuff, I couldn't tell. Whatever it is, it's a poor attempt to sound like someone from west Texas.

One pleasant (but brief) surprise in the movie is the appearance of Buck Taylor (remember him from Gunsmoke?) as the old man in one of the banks that gets robbed. It's an authentic role, I think...something that I'd expect could happen in a dying west Texas town.

Like I said, it's worth watching. Once.

I have to ask, but aren't most of the smart ones in the movies too? One robber held up the bank on the ground floor of the office building I was in. He took off from work at his construction job and tied a bandanna on in western bandit style. But he forgot to take off his hard hat which had the name of his employer acrosss the front in two inch letters. It also had his name, just in smaller letters. The police simply went to his employer and asked for him. The Judge that sentenced him said "you are truly too stupid to send to prison but I have no choice."

I had a guy who wrote his demand note on his paystub. He crossed out his name and the first digits of his SSAN, helpfully leaving his last four unblemished. I went to his job and they brought him to the office. I held up the note and said What The ****? He just looked at the floor and shook his head.

Back in the late 1970s I knew of something very similar. One of the employees of the oilfield service company I worked for stuck up a liquor store one night. He was wearing the company uniform with his name embroidered over the pocket. He wasn't too hard to catch. At that time, we were so busy we were hiring about any warm body who wanted a job.
