Hellcat, P365 and the Shield

A few years ago, I bought a 638 as my primary carry gun. Lightweight, familiar, better ammo available than the old days. Then I started looking at Kahr 9mm. Same weight.single stack so thin and easy to conceal. And 8 rounds instead of 5. The trigger had a long pull and felt like a revolver. Accurate out of the box, but I had a bonus check burning a hole in my pocket, so off it went to Cylinder and Slide. An additional $600 later, it is a wonderful EDC gun. Since then, I've bought many "new" carry guns and holsters. So I have a pretty big box of holsters. I have a Sig 320 Xcarry with a 21 round magazine. With two extra mags, I can carry 63+1. There are others. Every time I carry or shoot the Kahr or my 638, I wonder why I continued collecting or carrying anything but those two. To be fair, I carry a Shield frequently as well. I could've stopped there.

I have shot two of the three guns mentioned by the OP (no fair guessing which). It seems many have already made up their minds, but...consider the average "social encounter" with a handgun requires 3.5 to 5.5 shots fired.

My suggestion is try them all, buy the one with which you get along best (and a couple of spare magazines), and practice. Whether you do it with a $200 or $600 gun is entirely your call. :)

Loved my Shield PC .45 until I bought a P365. With a 12 round mag (12+1), you can't beat it.

I also have a Kahr PM9 and it's not reliable at all. Ammo gets stuck on the feed ramp. Sent the barrel to Kahr, they sent it back and ammo still gets stuck on the feed ramp. Kahr sent me a new barrel and....you guessed it, ammo gets stuck on the feed ramp. Yes, I tried a variety ammo.
How many rounds do you have through the Kahr? How do you grip the pistol?

Maybe the "average" engagement uses only 4 or 5 rounds. But imagine a Luby's cafeteria scenario and tell me how fast you could go to slide lock?

That's why I parked my 1911 and carry a M&P9. 18>8, and 17 more in the spare. And a carbine in the car with 30 rounds on tap.

In my opinion, the lesson from the Luby's Cafeteria incident is a 'single' crazed gunman without armed opposition can do a lot of damage. With judicious marksmanship 18 (13, 12, and probably 8) rounds to settle this would probably have been enough. Good on your home state and many others for changing this kind of law.

The nice thing is there are constantly more and more new options coming out so everyone gets to decide which suits them best.

I've been a Shield guy and have been more than happy with my "1.0" PC 9 Shield. I was considering trying the P365 but kept putting it off. Now that the Hellcat is out I will put it off again to see how this one performs.... the funny thing is I recently bought a 4" 2.0 PC Shield in .40....

I've had my Shield for about 5yrs and it works great not worn out yet it is my edc with it I have a 7rd and 2 8rd mags ( I also own 4 Sigs ) I can hit the ten ring at 30ft with this Shield and am very comfy with it, cant see spending another 500 when this works for me.

We since I reside in the People's Republic of Kalifornia, that ain't gonna happen....

Believe me, Delta Rose; escaping from that Marxist wreck gives you a sense of freedom that you probably haven't known in a long time. We got out to Arizona last February. I can't begin to explain what it's like to be in a free conservative state without the stupidity that happens in Sacramento, LA and SF on a daily basis.

I retire in nine months. Next summer we are putting this state in the rear view mirror, never to return......

I had a couple of Shields in 9 & 45, plus some small Walthers, a small Sig 320 and a small Sig 250. All went south and I went strictly old-school with my carry guns include: S&W CS9, 4513, 6906, and 3914; plus a Beretta PX4 compact and if I need a real pocket pistol a 642PC.

I can conceal them all very nicely IWB, I don't feel under-gunned or under-ammoed, I don't really like striker-fired, and like a bunch a folks here say, "Ya pays yer money and takes yer chances."

I'm not big on the flavor of the month, I carried Shields for a year or so, but I feel much more comfortable with hammer-fired type pistols and all are reliable as the sun coming up in the morning.

Well, the factors I consider for cc have been covered. Capacity, weight, size, control. If I listed the guns I've carried in the last few years it would take a while. I'm currently alternating between a shield 1.0 I've customized with XS sights and an apex kit and a Sig 938. Both suit my needs. Occasionally I carry a G29, FNS 9c or a J frame 357.

I had the hots for the 365 when I read about it but then found a few vids trashing it and decided to wait. Glad I did. Seems they've worked out their initial problems.

I'm interested in the Hellcat. Hell, why not :-). I told myself never another Springfield after the initial XDS .45 recall years ago and subsequent flood the market by them devaluing the one I owned at the time. I will concede the HC has a lot to offer. Really like the U night sights and red dot options.

End of the day I believe it's about carrying what you can carry vs the one you don't and leave at home. New products are exciting and I'm sure I'll try one lol. For the moment I trust my life to both my regular cc.

Meh, I'll stick with my Shield. It carries well and I shoot it well. It's wonderful that we have so many choices available to use. Those who feel the need for more rounds on tap can chose to carry a gun that provides them. More power to them.

My plan? Keep my Shield 2.0, keep shooting it once a week, keep striving to really master it, spend my money on ammo, occasionally watch a video or two about all the new "revolutionary" micro 9s that hold 3 or 4 more rounds, and realize that I don't ever need those extra 3 or 4 rounds if I can hit what I'm aiming at....

the P365 MS [manual safety] is the first striker fired pistol i've bought in quite a few years. it is perfect carry size and weight. it has been 100% reliable with range ammo [Federal American Eagle 115 gr]. the safety was defective from the factory, but Sig replaced the safety and i had it back in less than a week. after a hundred rounds of carry ammo it will be ready [hopefully] to ride in a Vedder Pocket Locker or Wright OWB holster.

the moral of the story? old dogs can be taught new tricks.
