Hellcat, P365 and the Shield

I don't like polymer guns but for a lightweight concealed carry or pocket gun they do work well. I think the Shield 1.0 is about perfect if it has a good trigger and I like the thumb safety and don't want any semi auto that doesn't have one. Since they are 200 bucks with a small and large magazine right now I might buy another one and I can't think of a better value in the firearms industry.

I just bought a Sig p365 sas and have put about 200 rounds through it. The sight system doesn't do anything for me at this time. Bright as day if you are shooting outside ,or indoor lighting. Dim in low light conditions and pretty much worthless as a night sight. I'm going to continue practicing to see if the sight system gets dialed in but I am skeptical. Reliable and accurate but my PC Shield 9mm is back on my hip.

HellCat

I still like my CS9 and 9mm PC Shield a lot. However, the Hellcat has peaked my interest, if for no other reason than I purchased my first Springfield Armory pistol, the EMP4 Concealed Carry Contour model last year, and have been positively impressed, the workmanship out of the Springfield Armory factory is top notch, it is extremely accurate, and I have found their customer service to be excellent. I have a habit of losing small parts like fiber optic sight replacements and other small pieces and always quick and easy to get a live person on the phone and get something shipped out to me, at no charge; they also seem to be very responsive to technical questions. So as I read the advertisements on the Hellcat, I am getting more and more interested.

I put the 365 through the paces and it ran flawless the ONLY reason I did not make the purchase is because the 365 did not feel comfortable in my hand. My G2 feels better and 1/2 the cost.
I am perfectly content with with my Shield 2.0 .45 and G2.

I bought a Hellcat 2 weeks ago, been once to the range, and I won't be making any more trips with it. IMO the trigger is a long pull and heavy and for me, not easy to shoot. I plan on getting rid of it soon. The rest of the gun is fine, I had no malfunctions and recoil is not bad.

I wasn't really a SIG guy, but certainly do have to admire the design of what unnamed engineer designed the P365. Mine has been absolutely flawless and I mean not one problem in 600+ rounds now. Vedder makes a great pocket holster for this pistol.

Personally, I have no interest in Springfield products (are they all made in Slovenia or Elbowinia or some other Eastern Europe country?) and just the name, "Hellcat" is off-putting. You can imagine if I only grudgingly got used to "High Power" than "Hellcat" is too much.

I was also impressed to go to the range and find that three out of seven shooters were happily practicing with their new P365 pistols.

Sure, I would rather that this was a Smith & Wesson product, but I am sure S&W is scrambling to get their new micropistola to market as soon as they can as I'm afraid they're getting smoked in this sector of the market.

Well, if SW doesn't come out with something better than the shield soon, its gonna end up in my safe. Flame me all you want but the P365 and Hellcat are finally what i have always wanted. Small hi-cap 9mm.. The shield is heavier and holds less rounds but they keep re-releasing the same old gun. Rant over.

anyone shoot the hellcat yet?

The shield can be bought for less than half the cost of the P365. At that price, I bet the Shield will sell more than double the qty over the P365 and bet Smith has made more $$ on it to date than Sig will make.

to the range with P365 MS today....want to take advantage of our Indian summer. have now put 400 rounds through it, including 150 Federal 124 gr HST jhp. not one malfunction in the 400 rds. am awaiting delivery of a Wright owb Predator holster. my Vedder Pocket Locker holster is ideal for pocket carry, but i prefer owb carry.

this is one nice pistol and can think of nothing i'd change. will be interesting to see what S&W brings to market to enter this segment. they have their work cut out.

I bought a new P365 SAS a little over a month ago. Had to send the slide and sight back as there was no tritium glow in the dark at all. Sig sent me a label and I got the gun backing a little over a week with a working tritium sight visible in the dark. I had taken it to the range before I sent the slide off for repair, and found that out to 30 feet, I could easily keep the shots in center mass. Once it came back from Sig, I went to the range again and tried 45 feet. I was still able to put my shots in center mass with a reasonably good grouping. I then took it to 25 yards. At that range, the slide and sight completely covered the silhouette. I could still make hits, but they were based on aiming estimates and looked like a shotgun pattern.

I know this is supposed to be a self-defense gun, but I was in the business for 37 years, a range master and shooting enthusiast. I was not comfortable with the lack of sight picture beyond 15 yards. I realize I might never be forced to use a pistol at longer ranges now that I'm retired, but I can't tolerate the lack of precision in the event that I did. I sold the gun last week. I ordered the standard P365 with the standard sights because I like the size and capacity. I had a P365 previously and found it had some utility when I needed a smaller, more concealable pistol. The platform, now that the bugs are worked out of it, is accurate and reliable, but for me the SAS is a no-go.

Beyond the various reliability issues with the P365, there is that issue for me (simply did not like the grip). Grip matters a lot with a subcompact 9mm (IMO). Shooting these little guns well is quite demanding relative to larger pistols, and how the grip works for you can be very important.

I found the shield 40 grip was too narrow for me. I was about to sell it when I decided to try the Hogue slip on specific for the Shield. That made a world of difference. Had to shoe horn it on, but the instructions said it would be tough. It does not move and added just enough thickness to make it comfortable. I do find without the pinky extension magazine, the gun seems to recoil a lot more. I do not like the short mag.

Yesterday, 11/14/19, in my search to try to find a reload to match the potential of my Sig striker fired pistols, I thought I'd use some factory ammo for a base line. I'm happy with the accuracy potential of my Sig P365 and I wish the triggers of the other two Sigs were as good as the P365! The pistols were my M-17, Sig P320X Compact and Sig P365. A big factor in the group size was the sight radius. The groups were shot, standing/ unsupported, at 25 yds. with Winchester 115 gr. JHP factory ammo. The reason I only fired 3 shot groups is because as an old man, I don't have the endurance any longer to work that hard and hold up. I've got a long way to go trying to find a reload that comes anywhere close to these results. The Sig P320X Compact (upper left) shot just under 2", The M-17 shot just over 1" and the P365 shot right at 3".

I own a Shield PC 9/.45 and a P365/P365 XL and enjoy them all but I enjoy and carry the XL the majority of the time. When I carried the P365 I used the 12rnd extended mag for the most comfort. The P365 XL and PC 45 are my favorite to shoot at the range.
The 365 XL is my carry 85% - 90% of the with a Compact 1911 or the PC Shield 45 as the fillers. I personally find them all to be great performers and easy to carry but the 365 edges them all in size and capacity IMO.
Today, even though I have spoken so highly of the P365 XL I will be toting the Shield PC 45.

I also slipped the Hogue Hand-all onto my 9mm and .45 Shields. It made a big difference (though it was fairly annoying to get on - warm it up a little and lubricate with some water).

In my opinion, and that's obviously all it is, the Shield shoots better and faster at speed than both those guns (likely because it is a little heavier). I have other carry guns like my SIG P229 and my Beretta PX4 Storm Compact that hold more rounds, are better shooters than any of these, and allow me to get a better grip and thus faster and more reliable draw than P365 or Hellcat. If increasing the magazine capacity adds even a fraction of an inch to the Shield's width, I don't want it.

Moreover, chances are if you don't win the gunfight in 8 or 9 rounds, you're not going to win it, and I also appreciate that—for me—the first 8-9 rounds are going to come out faster and more accurately using the Shield, and it's the first shots that statistically win gunfights.

The Shield also has a great track record. The P365 does not, and even though it's getting better, it's going to take years to catch up to where the Shield is right now. The Hellcat is similar to the P365 in that regard, but perhaps better since a 10k review has come out for that gun (something I don't see a current P365 fairly as well). As such, I just bought my Shield, and it's my second one, because I've learned through experience that track record matters.

Lastly, my Performance Center M&P Shield M2.0 was $328 after the rebate, and even after adding orange Ameriglo i-dot sights (my preference which is better than the ones offered on those pistols for me), it still came in over $100 cheaper than either of these pistols. It also has a minimalist manual safety that I use to holster the gun appendix, it has superior grip texture, and when I take capacity out of the situation, it really was easy to pick the Shield—again. I bought my first one in 2014 and it's the best pistol for me in the role I use it. Otherwise, I like full-size and compact carry guns. Again, that's just me, everyone is different. I've owned two dozen carry guns in the last few years, and I am done shopping. I like proven designs, and these all work for me.
