Hi all
I am semi retired, ex Aussie Air-force, and I was an Engineering Technician in Civvy Street. Originally from the Australian Bush (Outback) and started shooting when I was eleven.
I don't go hunting anymore but I shoot pistol matches regularly at my local Gun Club and I have a couple of semi-autos and black powder revolvers but the DA wheelies are my favorite.
I have a couple of Colt DAs also but my two shooters are Smith 4" and 6 1/2" model 27s. Nickel of course.

"warrigal" is an Aboriginal name for the leader of a Dingo Pack. It's part of "folk lore" really as dingo's don't actually hang around in packs.

G'day mates!!! I'm not in Oz but also way south! ;) Welcome to the forum lads. I didn't know you guys still had access to firearms. I though those were banned there. In fact you boys can't even carry knives from what I hear. Maybe you should fill us in on how things work down under. ;)

Hey Stirling,
its not as hard to own a gun but you just have to jump through the hoops. You need to do firearms safety training wether it's for long arms or a pistol, you can then apply for your license as long as you have supporting documentation from the club you belong to and a letter from a primary producer say that you are coming to the property to control feral animals, alternately you're a target shooter... this is for long arms.
For a pistol you apply to the firearms registry for a probationary license along with your supporting docs, this lasts for 12 months, in this time you can purchase one pistol either rimfire or centre fire, the documents you fill out for the transfer of the pistol are sent to the firearms registry who notify the local police, the local police call you and come to inspect your safe, which has to be to a particular standard and it also has to be bolted to either the wall or the floor. After your probationary period your allowed to but what you like as long as the caliber is no greater than .38 for a .45 you need another category on your license "high power", but you can also have a category added to your license called "collector", with this you can purchase anything, for example you could have a 29-3 ( .44 mag )but the condition is that the firearm is temporarily rendered inoperable.. so a trigger lock covers that aspect... and you aren't suppose to fire them ;) .
As for knives, the only knife you could have would be a folding pocket knife with a blade under 3 inches.
Semi-auto pistol are fine, but semi auto rifles you can't have.. well not in the state of NSW where I am, different states have different laws, but that's always been the case in Aus. I remember that you could but an AR15 or an M16 in Queensland but not in NSW but yet you could buy the chinese SKK..... anyway all of that is long gone.
Oh yeah... as for handguns the barrel length is restricted..
100mm for a revolver and 127mm for a semi auto, but again this varies from state to state
Hope this helps you see what it's like down here.

Cheers
