Hello from Argentina

When Delta Lines went belly-up, MARAD reclaimed the SS Delta Mar and refitted it as shown and renamed Cape Farewell. She was one of 17 LASH (Lighter Aboard Ship) vessels made. They carried 60-foot barges and about 100 containers. The idea was to service ports without container crains plus carry outsized cargo. They would anchor and drop barges off the stern which would then be towed ashore. Delta had three of these ships, Farrel lines had one which I also sailed on, SS Austral Lightning. We made voyages from the west coast to Hawaii, Samoa, New Zealand, Australia, Tasmania, New Guinea then return via Van Couver, British Columbia. One of the original 17 was operated by a German company and was lost in the North Atlantic. I sailed for 8 years, 1975 to 1983.
Very interesting data. In the old days, before the first port of Buenos Aires was built (Puerto Madero), ships had to anchor far away from the coast and unload their cargo via smaller vessels and sometimes these had to transfer their loads to wagons to reach the shore.
