Just thought I would say a big hello from NC and try to learn more about S&W revolvers. Currently I have only one, which is a 442 that is my favorite CC. Sold a few during the last 40 years, but now looking to add another Model 10 heavy barrel to the gun safe. One thing for sure, these older S&W revolvers have sure increased in prices since I was looking for a one. I found a Model 10-10 in real nice shape local, but its priced a little high for my taste. I am a shooter not a collector and 38 special is my favorite caliber. I may look for a 32 caliber at some point in the future. I enjoy reloading and casting boolits for all my revolvers. Is there a reason that a Model 10-10 would be one to shy away from? As a newbie, I do not know much of the history. I like the heavy barrel and it locks up good, and timing seems to be fine. No play at all, has papers but no box. It does have a 3 digit number in the crane along with the 10-10 but I do not know if that means its a police trade in or not? Its a close to new one as I saw but as I said I want a shooter not a collector so torn about paying so much for an older revolver? Any help would be appreciated.

You can find a shooter grade Model 10 (4 inch barrel) for $325 - $400 in Charlotte or on the local NC forums. Sometimes you can do a little better. Sometimes you might have to pay a few dollars more. You just have to do a little digging. Feel free to send a private message and I can point you toward some North Carolina resources.

The Fayetteville gun show used to be a good place to look for handguns, although like most now, it's probably full of plastic guns.

Welcome to the forum from another North Carolinan. Your 442 is a fine CC piece. My first duty weapon was a Model 10 heavy barrel. You'll find a bunch of knowledgeable and helpful folks around here.

Welcome to the S&W Forums! You have come to the right place to ask questions and find answers. By the way, there are no dumb questions... well, except if you have a question and don't ask. As for the 38 Special, you picked a great caliber. As for issues with the Model 10-10, I'm not aware of any versions of the K-frame 38 Specials that are to be avoided, but the fit and finish of the pre-1980 revolvers may be better than the newer ones. Until 1980, S&W revolvers received the mysterious and deeply lustrous Carbonia blue finish.

Welcome from Florida! The Model 10s (and earlier M&P .38 Spl) are great and dependable revolvers that were made in the millions. As stansdds mentioned, you might be happier with an earlier Model 10...there are lots around, although it seems that the 2" snubs are the most desirable right now. You could also try advertising here on the Forum for a Model 10 (whichever dash no. and barrel length you choose) in the "Want to Buy" section. There are probably lots of Forum members that would be glad to sell you a shooter-grade revolver at a fair price, and you'll know what you're buying! Good luck!

Thank you all for the big welcome. I am not sure at this point if I will make a offer on the model 10-10. Price is high, and I have not looked for any others yet. I am on the lookout for a S&W Model 10 though, wish me luck.
