I just ordered a S&W 642 stainless 38 special. I owned a Centennial in .357 many years ago but alas, I sold it. I am mostly a high power rifle competitor.

Welcome back to the fold! The 642 is an excellent carry gun but its light weight will mean sharper recoil than your centenial. This represents an excuse to spend even more time at the range.

Thanks!

Fortunately, it's not a target pistol. Once I get it test fired and I am accustomed to it, I don't see myself shooting it all that much. I might load up some light 110 or 125 grain ammo just to shoot it.

S&W VS a Taurus

I could have bought a Taurus 850 for a little less money but I opted for the S&W due to it's reputation. I think the Taurus would be alright for occasional use, however.

I have owned a few Taurus model 85s of various configurations. No problems with them at all. However, I always seem to sell them and buy a Smith.

Welcome from Texas JohnHO. Great forum for all things S&W, have fun, learn lots, share what you know.

Welcome from Virginia! Your 642 will serve you well if you practice with it enough. I carry a 442 when off duty as a backup to a belt carried Glock and as a primary when my sciatica flares up.
