These two S&W .22 revolvers I have. One a K-frame, the other a J-frame. Both are excellent shooters.

The K-22's make a pretty good canvas for talented engravers -

Phil Quigley engraved pre-war Outdoorsman:

Richard, your gems never fail to amaze me. Besides wondering when you will open your museum, I was wondering if you ever talked to some of the engravers who do this work?
If so, do they ever let on how many man hours or how many months it takes them to do this incredible work?

My rimfire collection is 4 for now. My favorite is my 617-4 4” 10 shot 22lr prelock and my 651 2” 22 mag. I also have 2 63 2” 22lr as well. Eventually will probably get a 617 4” 6 shot and a 63/651 4” round butt

I have two J frames I really like.

A model 63 no dash, square butt, 4 inch.
Very accurate gun.

The outdoor range I used to shoot at was 25 yards. Behind the targets was a wall with a 4" bell mounted on it maybe 30 yards out.

With my 30 year old eyes I could ring the bell almost every shot.

I also have a 650 that is fun to shoot. Makes a good practice gun for the models 49 and 649 I carry.

All of these nice revolvers,, I had to add my 617 Mountain Gun,,

The first ever 617 that I bought was the lower one in the pic below,,

To give an idea how long ago I bought it,, I paid $250 OTD,,

I think I got it cheap because it did not have the original rear site on it,,,

I have a 1951 K-22 masterpiece, that holds 2” @ 50 yards if I do my part. Was my grandfathers until 1991 when I worked for him one summer to earn it.
My uncle recently gave me a model 18 no dash that is in pristine condition, & shoots nearly as well, but still doesn’t feel like the k-22 that I have shot for 33 years. Both are great examples of how phenomenal that Smith once was as a manufacturer.

17-6 with full under lug and 4" barrel. Perfect weight, balance and trigger (for me).

Hi Bruce,
I am looking at a 17-6 as well. It has a 5.25" barrel. Just need your input before my decision to purchase it.
What do you feel of the longer barrel?

I have an early Model 17-3 that shipped in June 1968. It’s an early enough -3 that it has a -2 marked yoke. Was a bday gift for my 17th bday back in 1998. I’ve shot the fire out of it and with the exception of some minor rust along the top strap it’s in great shape. Finest .22 handgun ever made IMO.

To my knowledge this model was never made with a 5.25" barrel. Are you sure it's not a 6"? The proper way to measure is from the face of the cylinder to the end of the barrel.

Just curious what makes it a 17-3 if it is stamped 17-2?

3 T's 17-4 8 3/8ths bbl. A guy at works grandfather passed he was selling some of the guns that was left to him. I am glad he asked me first on this one. He said heck it's just a .22 I will take 200 bucks for it. Through it in my truck and went straight to the ATM.

I likely had most of the S&W models.....in .22lr.
No one here mentioned the .22 Jet Model 53 with .22lr cylinder adaptors. With the optional fitted .22lr cylinder, it is a very accurate revolver.

You mean like this one, and yes very accurate with the .22 lr cylinder.
