Just like to say hello to all on the forum, and take this opportunity to say how impressed I am with the knowledge and experience displayed by the members here. A superb site with some great people.
I joined about 5 years ago and rarely posted due to relocation, new baby, etc, so didn't really get the opportunity to introduce myself properly.
I must admit I feel a bit of a fraud though, because as you'll all know, firearms laws over here have killed off revolver ownership, although water pistols escaped the ban....
Before 1987 I had joined a club and used a 622, 686 and 629 on a regular basis, and whilst saving for my first revolver ( 686 6") the ban was enacted and swept it away.
Now of course, collectors here are reduced to decommissioned firearms, and I fit that category in that I collect S&W revolvers. Its a sad situation, and one that shouldn't be, but I guess I'd prefer them to be here with us in relatively minor altered form than completely chopped and recycled into saucepans, etc. They all tell a story, as does S&W's beginnings as a company and I'm grateful that a forum such as this exists. So thank you all. Dylan

Welcome to the forum Dylan. Hope we can paint visions for you to enjoy.

Not to rub salt in your past dream but I have a 686 in 4". It is wonderful. You would have had a very nice tool.

What about rifles or shotguns? Is this a possibility?

Many thanks for the welcome model70hunter. The 686 sure is a nice piece and a joy to shoot. A very handsome revolver and very practical in terms of size and calibre. I spent ages deciding between 4" & 6" back then, but having blasted away with a 6" for a long period decided that was the one to go with. Its sits in the hand very comfortably and balances well, both 4 & 6" models. Had things have been different re gun laws, I'm pretty certain I'd have added a 4" later on (along with other S&W's if I could have prized more cash from my wife's vice like grip....) I envy you sir!
Yes, we can hold licences for rifles and shotguns, and revolvers with barrels no shorter than 12" which must be permanently fitted with an arm brace (thereby extending the weapon even more). Taurus seem to rule the roost here, with many versions of their revolver range having 12" tubes. Nice pieces, but quite expensive. That's it for handguns I'm afraid. No semi-auto's or short barreled revolvers. Even some airguns previously banned can now only be bought de-activated. I often chuckle at the insanity of it all.
On a positive note, practical rifle shooting has really taken off here, and the range of models now available compared to pre 1987 (ban year) is phenomenal.
Superb range of calibres too, with the trusty M16 platform being used in a multitude of configurations and cals.
Shotguns seemed to always slip through bans unaffected, I think in part due to the fact that most are agricultural working guns or owned by wealthy collectors (who will break out the £32,000 matching Purdeys after midday tea and cucumber sandwiches for a touch of pheasant shooting....
Still at least its something!
Are you purely a 686 person or does it have bigger/smaller framed friends?

Welcome from Texas Dylan. Great forum for all things S&W, have fun, learn lots, share what you know.

Always grand to have a new member of the S&W family join in from across the Eastern pond.

It is always sad to learn of the restrictions in your country, government should believe in liberty.
