I was flipping through channels a few minutes ago during a commercial in the Alabama/Tennessee game and came across the Michigan/Illinois game. Apparently Illinois is celebrating their 100th year of football, and are wearing throwback uniforms. The uniforms are "meh" to me, but the helmets are extremely COOL to me! They are replicating the leather helmets of old with a helmet made of modern materials. I think they are really unique! Check them out.

Yup they did a good job with those Red Grange helmets.

Wonder what the price tag on one is..

I would guess the regular ones, without the communication capability, are probably in the $450-600 range. I read that the ones that have the communication capability worn by the QB's start about $900, and a company called Vicis sells their premium helmet of that type to the professional teams for $1300+! It says their helmets are wonders of engineering, and that if you started breaking apart the helmet, you'd know why. On the inside, the padding of the helmet is custom 3D-printed so that it fits the head of each player perfectly. That's why you can't swap one player's helmet for another. There's a good chance it might not fit properly. That's just a guess, and if I'm off, I'm probably low!!

Thanks for showing a picture. Many folks probably think they look terrible……folks that want every helmet to be chrome finished. But older guys like me probably find them very interesting. If I was having to wear a helmet, I for sure would prefer one of these marvels of engineering, to the real leather ones of old. I would love to have an actual authentic leather helmet and one of the new ones pictured above to display! But, no worries, because I'm cheap and the real leather ones may cost more than the new ones.

Evidently Illinois taxpayers can afford them. They are paying the head football coach over $6 million this year.

No, the boosters are paying him that much. Corporate donations are also funding him.

Someone once asked Bear Bryant why he made so much more than an Alabama professor. Bryant replied, "I had a better year." :D

Bryant also once replied to the same question, "Do 30,000 people show up to watch a chemistry test?" This was in the early 1960s, when SEC stadiums were around that for capacity.

College coaches EARN their pay, IMO. Dealing with the current prima donnas who have agents whispering in their ears all the time is no way to earn a living, IMO.
