I usually change the springs in my S&W revolvers by using a Wolff reduced power spring set. I normally use a 13# retun spring and the reduced power hammer spring.

I recently bought a nice 617 and made the same changes. I had to use a 14# return spring to get the single action trigger to just over 3#.

But the reduced power hammer spring caused about 30% FTFs in the revolver.

Can anyone that has a reliable 617 with a good trigger tell me what springs they used. And what, if anything else they had to do to make the 617 reliable while still having a nice DA trigger pull?

Thanks for your help!

I've never had luck using a reduced power hammer spring on a rimfire k-frame. Return spring I go pretty low (12#). I had a smith do a trigger job on a model 17 and it worked wonders. I am not so brave as to try that myself, but I do try to polish some of the "easy" stuff (e.g. rebound slide).

I currently have a j-frame that is doing well with a reduced trigger spring, which surprised me. Seems like a K-frame would take a reduced spring too, but hasn't worked for me.

I have both a 4" and a 6" Model 617. Though I have some revolvers with 16 pound rebound springs, I left the two 617 stock. They are very smooth in both single and double action (I have shot them a lot though so some of that may just be from use).
