Help for Haiti, who is giving???

Been working on donations here and I have a suggestion based on what we are seeing so far. Many people are donating canned goods, which is great, but if you have a choice the kind with the pull tab opening tops are best in this scenario.

Canned goods without a way to get them open can be frustrating for people who may have few to no tools at their disposal.

Hopefully the military or other organization has come up with quantities of the P-38 openers to distribute. We have seen some donations of canned goods where a p-38 was duct taped to each can.

Having been through a natural disaster and needing essentials like fresh water, I can tell you that the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army were there when I needed them. They get some of my money and goods all the time, and will get a little more for these poor souls in Haiti. Redlevel reminded me what my Lord's opinion is on the subject, and that is good enough for me.

The Salvation Army fed me Thanksgiving dinner in 1967.They will get my money now,as they get it Thanksgiving,Christmas, etc.I don't need another gun.

Aid groups like the Salvation Army and Catholic Relief Services won't be giving cash to anyone. Your donations are used to buy needed food, water, medical supplies and shelter stuff, and to transport it to the scene and to have the means to distribute it directly to those in need.

93% of the money Catholic Relief Services gets is used to directly provide aid. About 3% goes to administrative overhead and 4% for fundraising to generate more aid. Groups like this have experienced aid people in place already and others prepared to go there to do the work.

I am not a Catholic, my church has already sent aid and is sending more, but I give to CRS and Salvation Army too because they have an excellent track record of getting the most bang for your buck.

50% of the people in Haiti are children. They haven't done anything to deserve our emnity.

I PERSONNALY THINK THAT OBAMA SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO THROW OUR MONEY DOWN A CESSPOOL WITHOUT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE SAYING SO . DID THEY JUST KICK THE PRINTING PRESS INTO OVERDRIVE OR GET ANOTHER LOAN FROM CHINA? MILITARY AND OTHER BUDGETS HAVE TO BE APPROVED BY CONGRESS WHAT GIVES HIM THE RIGHT TO THROW AWAY A 100 MILLION AND HE SAID THAT IS JUST FOR STARTERS.

I gave through the American Red Cross. I agree that it is important to choose carefully a trustworthy charity.

You don't help people in a situation like this because you expect them to say "thank you," or give you something back in return. You help because as a human being it is the right thing to do.

Redlevel, thanks for the Mathew verses. I haven't read my Bible in a very long time. I'm not a capital "C" Christian, but I believe in living my life in a christian way. It's a good idea to check back on the instructions now and then!

Haiti is Haiti, will it change probably not. does that mean we want those kids to starve or die of disease I don't think so. Obama has really nothing to do with it. Look at some of the rat holes he has sent Billions to. Americans are by nature generous people as we should be. Haiti is just a example of what happens when the prosperous nations just don't give a damn. We have to help why? because that is the difference we are known for. Unlike some other very prosperous nations that just don't care. Are we to lower ourselves to their level or do the Christian thing and give all the help we can. For those who think like pat Robertson let me say this. I think there are a lot more nations deserving of Gods wrath than that poor as poor can be country. How about Iran just for starters. Heck Obama just made a closed door deal to exempt the union Cadillac health care plan from the special tax on Cadillac plans, other will have to pay for. Why? I'll tell you why, he was losing some of his special interest groups because they didn't like to pay the tax the rest of us will pay, one way or another. So he sends a Billion to Haiti, so what? the problem might just be who is going to cash that check. We will never change the minds of the radical terrorist, as we can't even change the minds of our own far right liberals. That doesn't mean we should stop trying. Evil only triumphs when good men turn their heads. Maybe just maybe our generosity will change some now kids minds, that in eight to ten years when everybody is taking pot shots at us stand up and say" Hay those Americans saved my life when disaster struck" So I'll give as long as we are sure the people are getting the aid and not that corrupt degenerate government they have. We don't have to have another Somalia where lack of back bone lead to a disaster. I'm sure those Marines down there are a hell of a lot happier giving aid to kids than shooting their parents. One way or another it will be one of the two. We have no stomach for another banana war. Ask Palosie and Reid they would rather give the money to Nebraska or the unions or to Louisiana to buy votes. I personally would rather buy friends than votes. We need to take a hard look at ourselves and ask why all this is happening. Could it be we have had it to soft, our youth don't know what hard times are. Give the money to good organizations that will get the help to those that need it, and then say as many on this forum have said, I don't need another gun right now. I can give up a night out, I can save some lives. It is the American way, it is the Christian way. If that degenerate Dictator gets in the way SHOOT HIM that is not a hard choice is it? Collectively we voted the messiah from Chicago in, now one way or another we have to live with it. but we don't have to lower our standards to his apologetic cow towing to ever half baked potentate in the mid east. At least this time it is a humanitarian project that somebody needs to do. So as usual it will be us.

One of the on the ground reporters for Fox said this was the worst loss of human life that he'd ever seen, the stench of death hanging over Haiti like a cloud, bodies all over the place.
This is a horrible event taking place. God help the Haitians even if some won't.

I just wonder what has happened to the 8 BILLION dollars a year we have given Haiti, the last 8 or 9 years. They did not use it too help there people

I will answer the above two posts in one...

Jimmy: What kind of help would you expect from Haiti?

Gunsmith: According to a government report, U.S. taxpayers handed "about 1.1 billion in assistance" to Haiti during the 1990s. In the following decade, the sum jumped to around $1.6 billion; it would have been higher if aid had not been cut off from 1999 through mid-2004 after the election of Jean-Bertrand Aristide.

If I give something I dont expect anything back, or it wouldnt be called giveing. Somewhere in the bible I read if your enemy thirsts, to give him water. I cant explain why I was born in the U.S.A, at the best time in history, by the best christian parents, I dont recall what I done to be rewarded that way. I cant explain God, I just trust in him. I dont belive we can hurt ourselves by doing kindness.
Yes, I have read of the looting, witchcraft, voodoo, corurption, ignorance, stealing, 4,000 escaped prisioners on the streets, welfare, aids, all manner of crimes and debachery. Whats that got to do with injured, starveing kids? Had I been born there, I might have been the badest.

In all fairness to China, they have a limited amount of US dollars to give to Haiti... they are lending their US dollars to America.

Guys... it's not about our federal govt being caring of other nations and people in distress... it's about the money and who gets it... and the power derived from those politicians deciding who gets the money. Always has been...

This Haiti tragedy sounds like another never ending occupation in the making.

+1 to everything he said.

I've been reading this for awhile and have to say something.Forget about their Gov and corruption.Kids and innocent people are suffering. We don't have to give, It's a choice we make.
Now God forbid if something like that happened in the USA,Should I say that because Obama and his Idiots run that country,Screw everyone.? NO.

Call me cold, uncaring, whatever. I am sending my prayers for the Haitians. But when it comes to money, food, medical supplies, all I have to do is go downtown, or read the news, and I see hundreds of thousands of people in THIS country who have nothing more than the Haitians. To me, this is the real tragedy. We can send hundreds of millions to Haiti, but for some reason we can't end the hunger and homelessness right here in our own country. We had a deficit of $1.4 trillion in '09, the government is spending money faster than it can be printed, and yet scenes like those below are growing all across the U.S. Many of these folks are vets, who fought for this country. My prayers to the Haitians, but my monetary and food donations will stay in this country.

True, we have our own problems right here..but we do offer help to our own through a multitude of charitable organizations that I'm sure many of us on this board contribute to. And sadly, many homeless do not take advantage of what's available to them. But I still can't believe how callous and insensitive some of the previous posters hve been to the plight of these devastated human beings. Picture yourself, or God forbid your child, trapped under a slab of concrete in 100 degree heat slowly dying from starvation and dehydration...I wonder if politics would enter your mind between your muffled screams.

Misty, I can agree to your thoughts somewhat. Fortunately, many if not the majority of the homeless in America can get off their butts and do something about it. Many have made choices in their lives that brought them to their knees, whether to not pursue their education that would allow them a decent job, drugs or alcohol, and mismanagement of their lives.

Haiti has had a corrupt government for decades, and I hope whatever relief we or other nations are doing will provide for the general population and not be scavenged by the government.

We as a nation are to giving and why should send money or aid to anyone else, how about helping our own?
First we blow your country to Hell then we rebuild it with our Money
We let anyone into the coutry then they ''FLY PLANES INTO OUR BUILDINGS"
If you are form another country and you have lived here for x amount of years you can apply for citizenship, We can't go to a different contry and do the same not that we would want to.
There is alot more i would like to say but it would not be "PC" to do so and i wouldn't want to offend anyone and get banned so hey AMERICA PUT AMERICANS FIRST AND SCREW THE REST

I posted earlier in this thread about my reasons for donating to reputable charities such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army to help them assist in dealing with this tragedy.
I ran into this article link Op-Ed Columnist - The Underlying Tragedy - NYTimes.com (from the NY Times, amazingly. The link came from Rush Limbaugh's site, I'm no pinko...). It does, perhaps, put the long-term problems of poverty in Haiti into some perspective. I don't buy all of it, but it is food for thought.
That said, the immediate situation demands our attention.
