Help identify these marking on my 681

Could be any number of identifiers.

Maybe (most likely IMO) a rack number for a former LE firearm. Or evidence tracking number. Or somebodies' personal preference to identify their firearms in case of theft or loss (last four of their SSN + an initial...).

This is a fairly common question that comes up from time to time. Hope this helps.

Yes most likely a PD or corrections issue number. It gives some “charm” to the weapon. I have a 681 with AFP-Australian Federal Police markings, their equivalent of the FBI.

Yea I figured it was a department marking of some type. Thought maybe someone would recognize it. Could be washington police or fire or Walter’s gun. I would think it would have been WPD or WFD if police or fire. Only curious. Endless possibilities I suppose.

Never understood that. Is it too complicated to just use the S/N? Rhetorical question, not directed to you.
Manufacturer serial numbers may overlap with other items in police inventory.

Or heck, even other guns in the pre-1968 GCA era. Back then, you might also have things like store brand shotguns that didn't even have serial numbers.

That would have to be some inventory to match up with multi-digit S/N's, IMO.

Yes, I have some pre-1968 guns with no S/N at all. That really upsets my OCD...............

Picked this up in April. I’ve posted it before but thought maybe someone would recognize the stamps View attachment 755727View attachment 755728
I have good old W 3642 right here, affectionately known as Pigpen. Check my avatar.

It is my favorite steel plate gun, and is currently wearing a set of comfortably oversized Mexican Nightmare stocks. It is a scratched-up, beat-up mess…and a bullseye machine.

I hope yours shoots as well as mine ! It sure is prettier!

I have refinished several guns in this shape -or worse- but after shooting it decided to only bead-blast and polish the cylinder. Well, and laser Pigpen in the side plate…
