I have come across an old S & W that looks like a model 10 but has no model indicated. Five screws, lanyard loop, serial W-422XXX, strain screw, fixed sights, designated for .38 S & W special ctg. Rough shape with some obvious warp in the extractor rod. I need a rod and a few other parts for it but don't know what model to indicate!

You have a .38 Military & Police. S&W didn't assign model numbers until 1957. It probably shipped in the 1920s. Pictures would be very helpful.

I‘m a bit puzzled about the W. If it were a V, it all would make sense and the lanyard loop would also fit, for a WW II, late 1943 Victory model.
Some Victorys had a large W stamped on the butt. I wonder whether that was the case on yours and it is obscuring the V, because otherwise the W makes no sense at all, certainly not on a 1922/23 M&P, which 422xxx would be.
Anyways, a Victory is also a .38 M&P, so you‘re still dealing with the same model.

Here's a shot of the butt on my Victory (shipped December 15, 1943).
It doesn't have the "W" alluded to in an earlier post, but not all Victory models did.
If the OP can't post photos, perhaps one in our 'mongst will post one of a Victory with the "W" to help the OP "see" what we're talking about.

There was never a W prefix to any S&W serial. Hence the confusion. There was a V used during WW II period. Perhaps it was double struck?
Also not impossible that original serial has been removed and some other number stamped in its place. There are folks here who can recognize authentic S&W stamps but that require a photo.

Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass! You are going to have to post some pictures. We are just guessing here although these guys are pretty sharp with xray vision

There will also be SNs on the bottom of the barrel and the rear face of the cylinder. It seems to be a WWII Victory model, but if so it would have a V-prefix to the butt SN. And also the other locations. If the extractor rod is bent, it may be possible to straighten it. All parts for it should be readily available.

You are all right, it is V. And I actually wrote down a V and then while posting misread my own scribble. My bad, sorry. I was planning to try to straighten the center pin and extractor rod but it appears I can buy both and the spring I need for less that $50. I expect that is the route I will take. The owner just wants it to shoot without scrubbing / binding. Thanks for all the help; if anyone still wants pics I will try to accommodate.

If you buy a replacement extractor rod, make sure the knob shape is exactly the same. Newer rods do not have knobs and some of them (from about 1960) even have left-hand threads.
Well, I ordered from Numrich, hopefully the knob and threads are right. Will return if not. I did notice the difference in the earlier knob and this one. Also this is the first one I have seen with right hand threads. All of my experience has been with left hand threads. Lucky i didn't wring it off. Thanks for all the help guys. i appreciate it.
Left hand thread guns never have oversized ejector rod ends AND the left hand rods have a small band machined down right behind the knurling.
