Picked this one up stop replace the lock model I have. Can’t seem to find any info on the engraving and was told it was original to gun.
Here’s a pic or two with the box label.

The engraving (NOT!!!) is lazered into the metal.....It will disappear if you holster and use the gun......Smith offered that as an option for awhile then it died out. Not durable at all.
My old 629 mtn gun was lazer etched instead of the usual S&W stampings and roll marks.........Today all that cheap etching is gone....NOTHING on that gun to tell who made it or caliber......My 686 mtn gun is wore slick too.

Gun was made in 1996. It's a 625-4 by product code.

Book doesn't say anything about the engraving, sadly.

Looking at your pics, it shows a -6, does it not? Those began in 1997, according to the book.
